One of my favorite things about traveling to new places is eating popular local food! Even if I can’t travel to a particular country, I enjoy going to ethnic restaurants and unearthing simple recipes. Last year I had a Kenyan friends who invited me over to her home several times for some simple and delicious Kenyan cuisine. This was my first experience with any dishes from the African continent, and I knew I definitely wanted to explore more! Technically not wordless, I wanted to share with you a new recipe I tried on Monday from Extending the Table: A World Community Cookbook.
I made the South African bobotie with soybeans instead of meat (see bottom of recipe for variation).
Yummy sauteed onions mixed with curry powder:
Deeds’s plate. Both boys ate this without complaint, although 4 year old Jojo only picked out the beans to eat. I think he doesn’t like onions anymore.
I baked it in a round 1 1/2 QT casserole:
Even my husband decided that he liked this dish; that isn’t always the case when I try something new from Extending the Table: A World Community Cookbook! He is kind of a peanut butter and jelly kind of man.

Hi! It’s been ages since I stoped by your blog - your profile pic is stunning! You’re talking about food from my home country here, so I have to comment. Yes, the curry flavored dishes are wonderful and you made me homesick when you mentioned Bobotie - yum! Have you tried a South African dessert called Milk Tart? (’Melk Tert’ in Afrikaans) It’s wonderful:)

Ha ha love it! My husband (from Ireland) is very much a meat and three veg kind of guy… I am ever so slowly breaking him out of his “if it doesn’t come with meat and spuds then it isn’t dinner” mindset. He has tried many new foods since meeting me - I might have to try out ‘Extending the Table’ to push his limits a little further again.
