goal The opening match of the 2010 World Cup was on June 11th. The quarter finals are coming up on July 2-3, semifinals July 6-7, and the Final match is July 11.

Why did over 700 million people tune in to watch the Italy win the World Cup finals in 2006?

Because soccer is the great equalizer. It can be played in a paved alley or dirt field by people with no shoes. It can be played in a nicely sodded field, fertilized and lined, by people wearing $100 cleats and matching jerseys.

Goal!, written by Mina Javaherbin and illustrated by A. G. Ford is a book for ages 6-10 about dynamics of friendship and the seriousness of soccer in a poor neighborhood in South Africa.

When Ajanji wins a federation-size “football” at school, he and his friends must out maneuver local bullies in order to play their game.

goal2 “When we play, / we forget to worry. / When we run, / we are not afraid.”

big kicksFor younger soccer fans, Big Kicks by Bob Kolar is a funny story about being a risk-taker and trying new things (even if you aren’t good at them) for ages 4 to 6.

Biggie Bear’s friends want him to play soccer with them, even though he is ginormous and prefers jazz music and stamp collecting over athletics.

Luckily, he looks really good in orange, the team color.

Biggie Bear finds himself in funny soccer scenarios, but always maintains his enthusiasm and self confidence.
