VTech MobiGo

VTech has a new portable gaming system designed for ages 3 to 8. I was a little nervous to agree to check out the MobiGo, not because I wasn’t excited about a new product but because my 5-year-old, Jojo, has been underwhelmed by games for preschoolers in he past.

On paper, the VTech® MobiGo™ looks fantastic. It has a touch screen that allows players to tap, pat, drag and drop, plus a QWERTY keyboard. All kinds of technological fine motor action happening there.

The goal of MobiGo is educational fun, and games endeavor to teach skills like math and language.

I noticed that all of the 11 game options available now are licensed characters. Currently you can choose from Ben 10, Disney Fairies, Dora the Explorer, Mr. Men & Little Miss, Shrek, and Disney/Pixar’s Toy Story 3. Games retail for $19.99.

MobiGo In mid-July new games will be available for download at www.vtechkids.com/mobigo !

You can download content online, and use MobiGo with 4 AA batteries or an AC adapter. Headphones can be added.

I give props for the moderate price point at only $59.99.

Our experience with the MobiGo has been very positive. It is intuitive enough that Jojo was playing with it right away. Each game has audio instructions at the beginning (you can choose to “skip” if you want).

The touch screen is very responsive and this unit seems tough. It has been dropped several times by both of my children.

Deeds is almost three. He can do the functions of the MobiGo but doesn’t understand the games, so his scores aren’t so good. I am comfortable letting him play with it though because it is sturdy and he can use the touch screen correctly.

My fave is the VTech Little Smart First Steps. Both of my daughters (now 7 and 4) used it when they were just starting to walk. It’s a very sturdy walker and has lots of fun activities on it. My granddaughter is about ready to start using it.

My son loves the mobigo, he just received one for his birthday 2 weeks ago. However, it is not loud enough or maybe the he has needs a major adjustment.

In addition sometimes it may frustrate him because he can not hear it comfortably. Example, he holds it up to his face practically to hear the commands.
