This is my second year to attend the Travel Blog Exchange Meetup. Last year we congregated in Chicago; this year the action happens in NYC.
There are two days worth of sessions…but I missed all of yesterday.
When my plane started its decent to JFK airport, my ears were in a lot of pain. You know, that is normal when flying. But this time was more severe.
I went to a TBEX pre-party on Friday night, trying my best to have conversations while my ears felt like we were under water.
That night my ears hurt so badly, I couldn’t sleep at all. At about 5am I got up and took a shower. Around that time I noticed my ears were bleeding.
As much as I usually try to “tough it out” when it comes to illness, this was new and scary territory. I went online and searched a walk-in clinic and made an appointment. The doctor said that he didn’t see a tear in my eardrum, but it might be torn, but it is definitely irritated.
He prescribed an antibiotic, nose spray, recommended Motrin, and a decongestant.
After a rest on the exam table (I think that made the doctor nervous) I stumbled around the streets looking for a pharmacy. In the meantime I felt super weak and had a rest in a cafe in the middle of 9 NYC construction workers. They didn’t pay me any attention but I was entertained by their animated conversations and crazy thick accents.
After one false start at some kind of homeopathic pharmacy (“We only have weird stuff” the pharmacist said.), I found a “real” drugstore and got what I needed.
I spent the rest of the day in bed.
This morning I am hoping to actually attend the meetings.
I can hear in one ear. Lets hope that “lefty” comes around soon.
I feel like a loser, how can this happen to Mom Most Traveled!
PS, the showers in this hotel are for Giants. That has to be 9 feet high.

Sorry you’re not feeling well! We recently had to reno our shower area due to tile leaking and mold and raised the height of the shower head two feet. It’s apparently the new thing. Our counters, however, are still the appropriate height for my nearly 4yo.

I still can’t believe that happened, even after you told me about it. I would have freaked out!
I’m glad you’re feeling better though. Hopefully your flight home is easy on the ears. It must have been all that quiet at home without the boys that made your ears soft for travel.

I hope you figured out what caused the bleeding. You must have been terrified!
