Aldi Awesome Holiday Deals

If you have never shopped at an Aldi grocery store, you are missing out.

By offering a selection of store brand and special buy items, and having a no-nonsense, no-frills store layout, Aldi has all of your staple foods and some fancy extras for amazingly low prices.

I already was a huge Aldi fan before the holidays, but I picked up two 99 cent chocolate Advent calendars from Aldi in November, and they have been the highlight of my kid’s lives this month.

IMAG2405

Every morning, the first thing they think of when they wake up is “Can I eat my chocolate now?”

And I’m all getting cool mom points, “Yes, darling.”

IMG 2303

When I walk into “my” Aldi, the first thing I encounter is tempting bottles of wine that average about $6.99 each. Then they have fancy chocolates and sweets, chips, crackers, jerky, fruit snacks, granola bars…on to baking goods like flour, spices, oil, mixes…round the corner past the granola bars and dairy case, stroll by cereals for under $2 a box, and then encounter “special buys” like holiday toys or seasonal foods.

Every few steps, I added items to my shopping bag. I was given a $25 Aldi gift certificate to write this blog post, and I was trying to make sure I spent at least $25. So every time I added an item to my bag, I typed in the price on my phone calculator.

By the time I finally reached $25, I could barely lift my shopping bag anymore! The prices at Aldi are so awesome, $25 goes a very long way!

Aldi has a lot of cool seasonal stuff at amazingly low price points. I found the Charlie Brown Christmas Tree for $7.99!

IMAG2404IMAG2403They also have real name brand toys, so Aldi can be a one-stop holiday shop before you go off to see the extended family!IMAG2402IMAG2401

I spent only $28 and got some great holiday items like a box of hot cocoa mix with marshmallows ($1.19), cordial cherries ($1.29), and even a pomegranate for .69 cents!
I love that I can buy fresh seasonal produce at Aldi for a low price. I scored 2 broccoli crowns for .99 cents, a 3lbs of sweet potatoes for 79 cents (seriously! a bag of sweet potatoes for .79 cents!), fresh salsa for $1.99, 3 pounds of gala apples for $2.99, a container of baby bella mushrooms for $1.49…I mean my produce budget can REALLY stretch far in Aldi.
In the summer they have crazy deals like nectarines for 25 cents each, and seasonal berries for dollars cheaper than other grocery stores in my area.

IMG 2341Aldi’s website is very informative as well. You can make shopping lists, check out their Suggested Shopping Items, ALDI Wine Pairing Tips, and Holiday Entertaining Tips!

You can save tons on entertaining staples like mixed nuts and cheese and wine! Impress your guests for less! Love me some ALDI!

Hard Rock Cafe Birthday Celebration@hardrockcafe #MyBlogSpark

Thanks to MyBlogSpark, I got to take the kids to Hard Rock Cafe, NYC.

I used the special outing to celebrate the August birthday of my youngest son Deeds.

NewImage

They have a bunch of new delicious dishes, which I never really thought about Hard Rock Cafe having good food, since it is all about the music.

Symphonies of new flavors are joining classic fan favorites and “greatest hits” as Hard Rock rolls out its rockin’ flavor menu. The new menu, based on three main concepts—fresh is first, legendary is king and “smoking” is back—will treat your palate to a true jam session, Hard Rock style.

Check out our pictures from a fun day! 2 Adults and 2 Kids ate for about $60, without alcohol. It was a fun day!

Jozsef Major, 3rd Place NYC Ironman Finisher! #DRIronman #Cbias

After interviewing Duane Reade sponsored triathlete Jozsef Major, I went back to the Ironman Village the next day to hear him give a talk about training for Ironman races.

IMG 0174

Jozsef has been a professional triathlete for 8 years, and has finished Ironman races 30 times. Incredible!

He is the 2008 Ironman Arizona Champion, the 2010 China Ironman Runner-Up, and the 7-Time Ironman Distance Hungarian Champion (2005-2011).

He shared his 11 week training summary and it is BANANAS!

IMG 0175

He starts of easy, swimming only 2.56 miles the first week of training, running 15.14 miles and biking 141.53 miles in that same week. Holy Cannoli!

He uses some kind of GPS to track his route and times and progress. On a 18.15 mile training run, his time was 2 hours and 19 seconds. Phew!

IMG 0171

Jozsef said that before an Ironman you should prepare mentally and make a plan. Don’t forget to HYDRATE! “Drink. drink. Eat. Repeat” is the mantra.

IMG 0176

It is important to fuel your body with good quality food, and be sure to sleep and relax before race day! You need to “taper” off your workouts, but still move your body!

Jozsef also advised that you can NOT make up for missed workouts. So don’t try to “cram” in a 100 mile bike ride! Tsk tsk!

Conversely, do NOT stop working out completely. Just take it easy!

That is sound advice from someone who knows!

Here is a Google + story, where I took lots of photos of his talk.

I Met Jozsef Major At The 2012 NYC Ironman Competition #DRIronman #CBias #SocialFabric

IMG 0172

Last week, New York City hosted its first ever Ironman race!

An Ironman Triathlon is one of a series of long-distance triathlon races organized by the World Triathlon Corporation (WTC) consisting of a 2.4-mile (3.86 km) swim, a 112-mile (180.25 km) bike and a marathon 26.2-mile (42.2 km) run, raced in that order and without a break. -Wikipedia

The race was met with great excitement, and competitor’s slots were sold out in less than 8 minutes after registration went live.

IMG 0157

I was told that over 1400 of the competitors were first time Ironman entrants!

In this 2012 Ironman competition, Duane Reade pharmacy was the title sponsor of the “Ironman
Village” and the sponsor of Jozsef Major, a competitor in the race.

IMG 0152

I went to the Ironman Village at Pier 92, W. 52nd Street and had the opportunity to interview Jozsef Major, who has been doing triathalons for 20 years, 8 years of that as a professional!

IMG 0174IMG 0154

In the past 8 years, Jozsef Major has competed in 31 Ironmans. Holy moly!

Jozsef had been training in Connecticut in the month leading up to the Ironman race, and on the weekends, he actually visited the actual ironman race route in NYC to practice the running portion.

He said that the running route was particularly challenging, and that the swim portion was supposed to be “easy”, though swimming is the part of the race in which he is least confident.

When asked for advice to young triathlete hopefuls, Jozsef Major said that it was important to learn good swimming form.

So, if you give your children a good foundation in swimming, they will have a future advantage in triathlon racing!

My Favorite Gluten Free Packaged Snacks

A lot of things don’t have gluten, such as “carrot sticks”. But what if you are on the road and you have the munchies, and you just want to be normal? Don’t worry. You are normal.

Try this awesomeness:

Beanfields. Corn free, vegan, gluten free chips made out of beans and rice. I know! They contain protein and come in cool flavors like Nacho.

NewImage

Pirate’s Booty! Made from rice and corn, some varieties are vegan friendly. They are a new generation of “puffs” snack, with a kick-ace name! My kids love this the mostest.

NewImage

Mary’s Gone Crackers! They sent me a variety of gluten free, dairy free deliciousness including cookies and pretzel sticks.

My only complaint? I consistently ate the entire box/bag of Mary’s Gone Crackers deliciousity in one sitting, rather than sticking to the serving sizes. Oopsie. Magically delicious!

NewImage

Note: With Mary’s Gone Crackers cookies, you will NOT say things like “it is pretty good…for gluten free.” Nay. You will say “Pass me 6 more please.”

SeaSnax.

Roasted seaweed with a little oil in crisp sheets and fun flavors?

Yes. I use these to make salad wraps, or eat the smaller packages on-the-go.

Word to the wise: when you babysit for a Japanese family, do not bring only one package for your own lunch. They will be begging you for a bite all afternoon.

Wonderful Almonds

I love almonds. They rule. You can get tasty delicious Wonderful Almonds in “raw”, “roasted”, “roasted and salted”, etc.

What I appreciate about Wonderful Almonds roasted and salted is that they use just the right amount of salt so that you aren’t running desperate for a beverage. My four year old and I eat these like they are going out of style.

But delicious almonds NEVER go out of style.

Skype Family Reunion

Homewood Park

A couple of weeks ago I visited my parents in my home town in Alabama. My brother lives with his wife and daughter in Spain. Every morning, my 4 year old niece calls my parents (her grandparents) via Skype from Spain. They share video calls and really stay connected.

My mom always knows when she hears the Skype “ringing” sound on her computer that it is most likely my niece calling her! It really is adorable.

When we were there, my two children joined in on the intercontinental Skype calls each morning. They told each other about exciting parts of the day, and shared details such as what was for breakfast.

My kids had been eating Capt’n Crunch Ooops All Berries, a variety without the little yellow pillow shapes in it, consisting of mostly colored balls.

When they told my young niece about this cereal, she said, “Why do you eat Poops All Berries?!”

Bwahahaha!

It became a family joke for the week.

“Want some Poops All Berries?”

I love Skype and I can’t imagine my life without it. With family in Asia, Europe, and various corners of the US, Skype is the best we can do to stay connected. It makes it easier to swallow that we can’t afford to fly to visit each other with any regularity.

With Skype, the grandparents can still see their faraway grandchildren growing and changing each day.

Also, in the past month, I was able to do a Skype interview for a job on a different coast. I love Skype!

PS, Skype, please get me a job!

Blogging Advice From My Seven Year Old

My 7-year-old son Jojo said that he wanted to help me with my work “like, make a list on paper,” was his idea.

So I told him to make a list of things I could write about on my website.19

Things to Blog About. By Jojo, age 7:

1. Write about the things you did and the places you go to.

2. You can tell what you like to eat and drink and how you make it. And even start a cooking class.

3. You can make signs and put them the things you should put on them is don’t dump trash on the ground, follow rules.

4. You can make stuff like artist. Be criative. Draw make wonder.

5. when me and dede get home to alabamha were going to play something fun you should write about that.

To everyone who has ever said, “I just don’t know what to blog about”, there you have it.

Write about the things you did and the places you go to.

Tell what you eat and drink and how to make it.

Blog about causes and rights and rules that you are passionate about.

Make stuff. Be CriAtive.

And when you play something fun, write about that.

How Do You Skype?

What is an unexpected yet awesome way you have used Skype?

Before Skype, when I lived overseas, I only spoke to friends and family on the phone less than once a month. And, since the call cost about 33 cents a minute, I was far to stressed to actually have a conversation.

Skype makes my world go round!

Screen shot 2012 02 27 at 7 19 53 PM

You might know that Skype allows you to do video calls over the internet, but did you know that for $60 a year, you can get your very own PHONE NUMBER on Skype?

Why would you want a phone number? Well, for example, when I was working in Asia, I bought a phone number on Skype with an Alabama area code. This allowed my parents to be able to call me with a normal telephone at no cost to them, before they ever were able to figure out how to use the internet.

I also was able to do conference calls from Asia to the US without racking up an astronomical phone bill. In fact, many people I worked with didn’t even know that I was living in Asia.

How’s that for sneaky? Another cool thing about Skype is that you can download the Skype app on to your smartphone, and then just use it like a regular phone. Its kind of awesome.

In the old days when I first started using Skype, I had to stay in front of the computer with my little microphone headset on. Not anymore!

I have video Skyped on my smartphone whilst driving in the US, or whilst working late in my office back in Laos a few years ago.

And I would Skype you in a boat!

And I would Skype you with a goat…

And I will Skype you in the rain.

And in the dark.

And on a train.

And in a car.

And in a tree.

Skype is so good so good you see!

Deliver Some Love To Far Flung Friends

“I have found out that there ain’t no surer way to find out whether you like people or hate them than to travel with them.” – Mark Twain

I have been a traveler for over a decade now (ahh! I got old!).

Besides not really being rooted in one place, being a traveler also means that I have friends and family scattered all around the world.

I didn’t collect a lot of souvenirs in my travels, but I did collect a lot of friendships.

I have a brother in Spain, friends in dozens of countries, and other loved ones in just about every US state. I’m thinking of doing a World Friend Tour.

But I digress…

What I’m hinting at is that I haven’t always been able to physically BE there with/for someone when they are celebrating major life events or struggling through hard times.

I want to remind my faraway friends that I care and I am thinking of them…an email just doesn’t seem poignant enough some times, and I don’t always trust the mail system (we got some Christmas cards in February once when we lived in Laos).

I have gotten creative over the years and began ordering gifts online from places like Etsy, when it was a holiday or event I could anticipate in advance.

For other, more spur-of-the-moment tokens, I have resorted to ordering flowers online to be delivered to places that are miles away from me.

Flower delivery by Interflora is a place where you can order flowers delivered to more than 140 different countries. Which is amazing!

If you know someone, and they live in some country…you can probably have flowers delivered to them.

NewImage

I have sent flowers to my mom many times, and to friends who have lost a pregnancy.

It is hard to know what to do in that situation, but I feel like doing nothing is the worst course.

Father’s Day is coming up and I won’t be within 500 miles of my father, but I can send him something special thanks to the magic of the internet!

I love you, internet!
