Pinterest for Dummies #Giveaway

I have been interviewing for social media jobs, and many times in the interview, the would-be employer wants to know my experience witn Pinterest.

Its funny that three years ago Pinterest didn’t exist, and now almost every consumer brand wants a piece of the Pinterest pie!

Whether you want to use Pinterest for personal reasons or to promote your blog or business, you need to jump in to it now….it is one of the fastest-growing social networking sites!

Pinterest For Dummies starts at square one, from how join Pinterest, connect it to your Twitter and Facebook accounts, set up your profile, and start following other members, to using all of the features and driving the Pinterest community to your own site or products.

So while Pinterest For Dummies does start in authentic “dummy!” territory, it does get advanced by the end of the book. So you can glean knowledge no matter how hopeless or advanced you are in social media.

I am going to keep this in my social media tool box, whether I need to refer to it for myself or to help give me the right angle to explain Pinterest to a client!

Would you like to enter to win a copy? If you have a US or Canadian mailing address, leave a comment on this post with the answer to this question:

· What one thing about Pinterest confuses you the most?

This contest will close at midnight EST, Monday, May 28th. One winner will be chosen at random.

Bathroom Time is Me Time @Ivory #IvorySoapDish

I have been a fan of Ivory soap since I was a child.

I love the smell, the fact that it floats, and I felt super special when I was at some kind of camp and we got to carve a bar of Ivory soap. I made a whale.

A white whale.

I am a fan of Ivory, and Ivory is a fan of moms. They did a survey and found that 66% of moms lock themselves in the bathroom to steal moments of “me” time.

Or “you” time…its not “Candice Time” its personal time, ya dig?

The survey of more than 1,000 moms reveals that 80 percent of American moms think motherhood is actually more complicated today than it was 20 years ago.

And while they may be more stressed out and busier than ever, almost nine out of 10 moms think they’re doing a better job balancing it all than their mothers did.

The complete survey questions and results will be shared throughout the “Soap Dish” Facebook community. You can be a part by  visiting http://www.facebook.com/ivory!

You know that chick that plays Molly on the show Mike & Molly? Her name is Melissa McCarthy, and she is the Soap Dish spokes-lady. She is likeable. I wonder if she uses Ivory soap and thus smells 99.44% pure? You can “dish” with her and other moms on Ivory’s “Soap Dish” forum.

You might be surprised to learn that Ivory comes in three scents now! There is aloe, lavender, and original.

I love original, but I also give props to the aroma-therapeutic properties of lavender!

Lets carve a whale!

I definitely use the bathroom as my sanctuary.

That doesn’t guarantee that I can always be alone in there…but I do try.

I have exaggeratedly time consuming self-care tasks that I don’t rush through, such as flossing and exfoliating.

Whatever it takes, my friends. I need to be alone with my thoughts from time to time.

20 Truths That Show Social Media Is Your Mistress

Yesterday I read an article by @JasonKeath entitled 54 Warning Signs That You Work In Social Media.

I found it a therapeutic read, and I thought I might feel better to get some other truths off of my chest.

1) You have at least 2 twitter apps on your smartphone, and have run Tweetdeck, Hootsuite, Tweetadder, and Tweetgrid simultaneously.

2) It takes great restraint on your part to not give the silent treatment to people who say “I just don’t GET twitter.”

3) You have been scouted for a job and made it to the phone interview phase, based solely on twitter interactions.

4) The job referenced above is one that didn’t exist 10 years ago.

5) When you meet people at networking events, you avoid addressing them directly because you can only remember their twitter handle, and not their actual name.

6) You have relatives who aren’t on twitter, but check your twitter stream daily.

7) Auto DM’s are one of your Deal Breakers

8.) You used to like @Klout until they offered you Axe body spray instead of a Windows Phone.

9) Posting something on Facebook makes it more real.

10) You mentally criticize people with no vision for their Personal Brand.

11) Children in your life believe that you are famous, because they saw your image on a webpage or Youtube video.

12) You have ever gotten a super exciting opportunity that took so much explanation to a non-SocMe person, you vowed to keep such things to yourself from that moment on.

13) You compulsively check for a WiFi signal, even while zip-lining in the tropics.

I might have taken the above photo while zip-lining in the tropics. With my smartphone in my bra.

14) You are too ill to stand, but you muster the energy to grab your smartphone and check your various pages. Maybe even “like” a thing or two.

15) Admit it: you don’t fully turn off your device before take off and landing.

16) Your self worth rises proportionately with the amount of likes, comments, replies, and retweets you receive each day.

17) It irks you when the Real Life person doesn’t look like their avatar.

18) You use hashtags outside of twitter, and if you could figure out how to speak them, you would.

19) The majority of your Facebook friends are people who you initially met through social media.

20) You don’t like to admit it, but you are actually more excited about your next social media conference than you are about your birthday, most holidays, and your niece’s wedding.

When Complete Idiots Do Social Media Marketing @IdiotsGuides

To me, Social Media Marketing is very intuitive. Which is fine, if I’m working alone. But, as a Digital Strategist at a PR firm (woohoo!) I now have the task of coaching digital immigrants in building their brand identity online.

A good go-to guide for helping beginners navigate the social media landscape is The Complete Idiot’s Guide to Social Media Marketing.

The Complete Idiot’s Guide to Social Media Marketing has sections dedicated to marketing your business on facebook, using twitter, using LinkedIn, and other ways to expand your online presence and project a consistent message.

I found all of the advice and information in to be very up-to-date, and there is even a new edition coming out in April! These people do not rest on their laurels!

I gave the For Dummies series a look too and picked up Social Media Marketing for Dummies.

I thought that the two books would be similar, but I actually found that the For Dummies book to be out-of-date, and it even used non-standard terms, which was confusing to me (and I’m a professional here, people!).Photo 3

So, in this showdown, I recommend that you be an IDIOT, and not a DUMMY, and choose the The Complete Idiot’s Guide to Social Media Marketing.
