I love breakfast cereal; it always feels like a treat and indulgence. Well, who knew, its actually healthy.

Every cereal with the white check has more whole grain than any other single ingredient with the same great taste. I can eat them with nondairy milk and not be left out of the fun, healthy nostalgia.

You will see “whole grain” as a part of the first ingredient on the ingredient list, indicating that whole grain is the first and most prevalent ingredient.

The Dietary Guidelines recommend people get at least 48 grams of whole grain in their daily diets.

Choose whole grain versions of the foods you love. Great options include whole wheat pasta and whole wheat bread or even whole grain crackers. Also, try different types of whole grain. Use brown rice instead of white rice as a side dish at dinner or popcorn, which is a whole grain, for a snack.

To help with choosing products with whole grain, General Mills developed “Fast Lane for Whole Grain,” an online educational game. Consumers can navigate virtual grocery store aisles and identify products that have whole grain as the first ingredient, with the option to enter a sweepstakes to win one of each of the 50 cereals with the white check.

Dulce de Leche Cheerios Prize Pack

Cheerios comes in a plethora of flavor options these days!

New to the Cheerios fam is Dulce de Leche Cheerios. with a hint of caramel flavor.

Dulce de Leche Cheerios is made with whole grain and 6 grams of sugar per serving.

Cheerios dulce de leche logoI gave them a try with coconut milk, since I have a dairy allergy, but I think I prefer them dry. I use cereal mostly for snacking purposes.

You could also get creative and try these recipe ideas:

I like that you can adapt the recipes to be vegan, gluten free, or whatever other dietary concerns you have. The recipes don’t take long to make (less than 15 minutes), and many can be made in the microwave.

The red boxes make me think it would be a fun treat to take to the office for Valentine’s Day, too! The possibilities are endless!

Chex® Honey Nut Cherry Crunch

Start to Finish:15 min
Makes:28 servings (1/2 cup each)

Ingredients

4 1/2 cups Honey Nut Chex® cereal
4 1/2 cups Rice Chex® cereal
2 cups whole cashews
1/4 cup packed brown sugar
1/4 cup butter or margarine
1/4 cup honey
1 teaspoon salt
1 cup dried cherries
1/4 cup toasted sesame seeds


Preparation Directions

1. In large microwavable bowl, mix cereal and cashews.
2. In 2-cup microwavable measuring cup, microwave brown sugar, butter and honey and salt uncovered on High about 1 1/2 minutes, stirring after 1 minute, until mixture comes to a boil. Stir butter mixture. Pour over cereal mixture; stir until evenly coated.
3. Microwave uncovered on High 4 minutes, stirring every minute. Stir in cherries and sesame seeds. Microwave an additional 3 minutes, stirring every minute. Spread on waxed paper or foil to cool. Store in airtight container.

General Mills’ donations will be divided between two important Komen programs: the Treatment and Assistance Program, which assists women in securing care they otherwise may not be able to afford, and Prevention Research, which helps unlock the keys to preventing breast cancer.
