@Squinkies Hot New Collectable Toy Coupon Code

I was lucky, back in September, to get to view what will be this years top holiday must-haves.

As a mom of boys, one stand-out to me was Squinkies:

IMG 2642

What we are looking at is highly collectable, inexpensive play sets of LICENSED characters, modeled after vending machine toys.

Yes. Just let that genius sink in.

SMB cars2 series3ramp image

There are Squinkies with “boy” themes like Marvel comic characters, Disney Cars, Toy Story, Hot Wheels, Ninjas, Monsters, and the like.

“Girl” themes include Friends, Pets, Puppies, Babies, Ponies, Disney Princess, Barbie, and Hello Kitty. I know!

SMB toyStory3

It doesn’t stop there. The genius extends with playsets that incorporate gumball machine-eque-ness into the cool themes.

And! They fold up and put away all nicely. WIN! WIN! WIN!

The little playhouses come in different themes and work just like a gumball machine, dispensing little figurines instead of balls of gum, and can store many different pieces.

Look for Squinkies at Wal-Mart, Target, or at http://shop.squinkies.com!

Right now there is a 25% off coupon code you can use on purchases at http://shop.squinkies.com!

Go to http://shop.squinkies.com/ and enter discount code: SQUINKIES25.

This code needs to be entered prior to checkout in order for the consumer to receive 25% off their entire purchase (excluding shipping & taxes). A deal this good won’t last long, though. The coupon code is scheduled to expire on 11/11/11.

Budget Friendly Stocking Stuffers From A Toy Garden

stockings and hats 1008Will you be on the road this Christmas, or simply need to spend less on gifts this time around?

For 2009 I have made it my mission to track down low-cost, big impact gifts that are friendly to the budget but won’t give you a reputation as a cheapskate!

Making the Christmas stocking an exciting part of your gift giving is a great tradition to start that helps save money and build anticipation!

For the past two years, I have given stockings to the boys on St. Nicholas Day, December 6th. This is a way to spread out the gifts so that there isn’t a big “crash and burn” effect on Christmas Day.

Everybody loves lots of treasures in their stocking; why not let each family member add little goodies to each other’s stockings so everyone gets some surprises!

Throughout the day, more surprises could show up in the stockings, especially if another relative visits, so the stockings become an all day treasure hunt!

Natural and safe products for kids are a passion of mine, so I was extremely pleased to discover a smorgasbord of  affordable gifts at AToyGarden.com

The motto at A Toy Garden is, “Thoughtful toys for caring people!”

A Toy Garden sent us a beautiful Wool Snowflake Stocking, which retails for $29.95. The stocking is huge, gorgeous, and hand made in Nepal using fair trade practices!

Here is where I sheepishly admit that I have been trying to hand make embroidered stockings for my family for 4 years. As a result, Nick is the only family member with a stocking. Until this year!

Now, how to fill that stocking? A Toy Garden has you covered! Here are a few of their favorite Stocking Stuffer options:

Custom Decor

Danielson Designs, a U.S. company that sells custom decorative signs and frames, caught my attention when they emailed me an image of a custom sign they designed for my family.

They kindly invited me to personalize a sign or frame on their website,  The Studio – Custom Décor So Simple it’s Stunning.

I had a great time experimenting different ways of customizing the many decorative signs and frames, using the neat interactive features.

Whatever I wanted to change or add could be instantly viewed on the site.

When I made my final decision (a sign for my parents with their family name and a blessing for their house), the order was shipped extremely quickly and my parents were thrilled with their custom sign.

Creating the sign was easy to do, and the prices at http://thestudio.danielsondesigns.com are very reasonable.

Most of the decorative signs and photo frames are $39.95, and they have a new monogram design for $24.95.

And? I have a coupon code for you! Use promo code TRAVELERS for $10 off your order at The Studio. (Think about the people on your Christmas list!)

Besides quality custom decor and super fast shipping, I also admire that Danielson Designs uses 100% recycled wood for all of their signs and frames.

Not only that, the products are made in the USA; in Trinidad, Colorado, to be exact. Their business has brought jobs and revitalization to what was an extremely economically depressed town.
Not only THAT, they also use their profits to help dig wells in remote villages in Africa (20 so far!).

I can’t see any reason not to support this fabulous family business!

Thank you, Danielson Designs, for allowing me to experience your wonderful products and fantastic customer service!

Holiday Baking- Cinnamon Ornaments

I am in the middle of holiday baking right now. I’m having a “gala” at my house on Christmas Eve, playing hostess to I think 20 guests.
I ran out of flour so I’m waiting for hubs to get back from the store. I need 12 more cups!

Have you ever made Cinnamon Spice Ornaments?

The ornaments are easy to make and their aroma lasts long after the holidays are over. Yum!

Here is a recipe I found:

Makes 12 to 15 ornaments.

Prep Time: 30 minutes

Cook Time: 2 1/2 hours, or 1 to 2 days drying time

INGREDIENTS:
3/4 cup applesauce
1 cup plus two tablespoons ground cinnamon

Supplies needed:
cookie cutters
drinking straw
colorful ribbon

DIRECTIONS:
1. Preheat oven to 200°F.

2. Mix applesauce and cinnamon with hands in small bowl until a smooth ball of dough is formed. Using about 1/4 of the dough at a time, roll dough to 1/4-inch to 1/3-inch thickness between two sheets of plastic wrap. Peel off top sheet of plastic wrap; cut dough into desired shapes with cookie cutters. Make a hole in top of ornament with drinking straw. Place ornaments on baking sheet.

3. Bake for 2 1/2 hours. Cool ornaments on wire rack.. (Or dry ornaments at room temperature, on a wire rack. Let stand 1 to 2 days or until thoroughly dry, turning occasionally.)

4. Insert ribbon through holes and tie to hang.

I wouldn’t mind having lots of these all over the house!

Jojo’s Christmas Program

Jojo is 4-years-old, in pre-k now, and I have to say that this year’s Christmas program is the weirdest to date.

Granted, he has only been in one other Christmas program, but see if you agree.

Firstly, I got a mysterious note that Jojo needed green clothes and “a tail” for his costume. No one told me what kind of tail he needed or what kind of animal he was going to be.

So I sent a small fuzzy dinosaur cape that I rolled into a tube and secured with rubber bands onto a scarf that they could tie around his waist.

CM1

It isn’t until I’m watching the program that I realize that he is the tail of a dragonfly. That is his part in the “Christmas” program. The tail of an evil dragonfly who kidnaps a princess (I wish I were making this up).

I kind of wonder if his teacher even likes him.

CM2

Apparently my tail wasn’t huge enough so they made a giant green triangle of poster board and then rubber banded my puny tail to the very end of it so that it dragged the floor.

Other acts in the Christmas program included a sexy dance performed by 6 year olds, and a group of 2nd graders lip-synching “I Wanna Hold Your Hand.”

CM3

This picture is from the end of the program when all of the students sang “We Wish You A Merry Christmas”. Can that little bald kid be any cuter?!

He looks like a cartoon character! Have you ever seen the Henry comic strip?

cm4

Don’t ask me how, but none of the children were afraid of this Santa Claus. He handed out gifts that the parents brought in advance (Santa is always stealing the credit, isn’t he?)

After the Christmas event I was tucking Jojo into bed and he said, “I saw Santa today”.

I asked, “Oh, really? Where was he?”

Jojo: “At my school. He had a mask.”

Me: “Oh yeah. That was just a pretend one, huh?”

Jojo: *silence*

Me: (realizing my mistake) “It was a scary mask, huh?”

Jojo: “It’s not scary. It’s funny.”

It’s all in your perception, I guess!

Santa Claus is Comming…To Laos?

A few days ago Jojo told me that he wants to go back to Alabama, because Santa Claus doesn’t come to Laos.

I’m not sure where he got his information; I guess it might be difficult for Santa to get the necessary travel documents, visas, passports, etc that he would need to enter Laos. Just about anything here ends up taking longer than you think it should.

My friend Lisa informed me that her family watches Santa go around the world on Christmas eve through a cool website that tracks Santa with the Norad satellite.  He hits all the continents, according to this website. She assures me that Santa does not skip Asia.  It sounds like fun to keep track of him as he makes his gift deliveries on Christmas eve: www.noradsanta.org

My husband made the point that what if we log on and it shows that Santa has already come to South East Asia, but he hasn’t yet left a gift at our house? That could be traumatic…

Since Jojo and Deeds can’t read, I can tell you that Nick and I went out today and did the Christmas shopping for the boys. We ended up spending only $102 for both, which I found amazing!

Also the store had free gift wrapping, woo hoo!

All of the toys we got today are made in Thailand by Voila. Jojo will be getting a doll house and two wooden figures on wooden motorcycles.

Deeds gets a wooden xylophone and a pull along doggy.

I hope that Jojo doesn’t feel deprived on Christmas. He really really wants a Woody doll from the movie Toy Story, but I have no idea where to find something like that.

Especially if you consider that Toy Story came out 15 years ago.

I checked on Amazon and there was a Woody doll for about $50; that is ridiculous! I cannot let myself shell out that kind of coin for a stuffed toy.

Jojo has a Buzz Lightyear action figure and he told me that Buzz needs Woody. He also wants a Mr. Potato Head and a slinky dog, like in the movie. I have to say Disney/Pixar did a genius job with the marketing/ product placement in that movie.

What are your little ones getting this Christmas?

Deck the Halls with Taraluna

I put up the Christmas tree today, with much enthusiastic help from my 4-year-old son Jojo.

This year we added some new ornaments to our collection from Taraluna Fair Trade, Organic, and Green Gifts.

Jojo was excited when he saw these new decorations!

TLElephant These beautiful hand-beaded ornaments are made by artisans in India, under fair trade conditions.

I love elephants, having spent lots of time in Laos, a place that used to be called Lan Xang, meaning Land of a Million Elephants.

This Heirloom Quality Hand Crafted Grey Elephant Ornament is a meaningful addition to our tree.

He is 3 1/2 inches long, has a soft, satiny body with tightly sewn beads and sequins.

These ornaments are distributed by World Finds, a company who works with women’s self help groups and small artisan families to help them make a living from their craft.

TLlion

This is Jojo’s hand holding the Heirloom Quality Hand Crafted Lion Ornament. It is a full 3″ long and very sturdy.

The whiskers and black outlines are made from tightly coiled black wire that is smooth to the touch. The beads are sewn on securely. The body is stuffed slightly and feels soft.

ornaments_elephant_STR

Our new Heirloom Quality Hand-Beaded Red Elephant Ornament fits right in with my red, silver, and gold Christmas tree theme that I seem to have unconsciously created.

These ornaments from Taraluna add a touch of whimsy to our holiday decor (who would expect to see an elephant amongst the candy canes?), but they also represent the good will of the season.

Buying fair trade products guarantees that your money is going to support a artisan who is being paid a living wage.

Taraluna has a wide selection of fair trade products, like housewares, beautiful handcrafted Christmas ornaments, green lunch products, baby clothes, toys and gifts, jewelry, spa, fair trade organic chocolates, teas, and other unique items!

I met someone two weeks ago who works in a sweat shop. She is a twenty-two-year-old girl who sews upholstery for 12 hours per day, earning $25 per month.

The factory is not air conditioned or heated, and is surrounded by high walls and barbed wire. Usually the workers are “given” a place to sleep within the compound walls. These are very simple, shared accommodations that are in worse shape than homeless shelters in the USA.

I don’t know if she gets the weekends off. Probably not, because most blue collar workers in Laos have a 7 day work week. But even if she only works 5 days a week (60 hours), that is about ten cents an hour, right? I do not want to support the people who are making money off of her loss of human rights. If we purchase products made under these conditions, we share the blame that they continue.

I usually try to avoid tangents in my review posts but I think the term sweat shop is glossed over and joked about in the United States, but it is real.

Please do shop mindfully; Taraluna encourages you to join them in “changing the world one purchase at a time” by buying fair trade, sweatshop free, organic, and natural.

Taraluna wants to give a special Christmas gift to one Mom Most Traveled reader!

Family Christmas Traditions

I have a friend who is a homeschooling mother of five boys who is always totally on top of things. She comes up with all kinds of neat projects and ideas to engage her children and teach them all kinds of life lessons. I really admire her. I have never felt like I am THAT kind of mom.

It was my friend who inspired me to develop some unique Christmas traditions for my family. Here are some of my favorites.

1) On December 6, we celebrate St.Nicholas Day. St. Nicholas is the actual person in history who our Santa Claus is loosely based on.

A lot of families wonder if they should “do Santa” or not “do Santa”. All of our Santa stuff happens on St. Nicholas Day.

St. Nicholas brings fills our Christmas stockings on December 6th. I try to include a wooden toy like St. Nicholas might have made for the children in his village (this year Jojo will get a small wooden pop gun I found for $2.95 at the book store). I also try to include some “gold”, usually chocolate covered gold coins.

I also bought a simple children’s book about St. Nicholas that we read on this day, and talk about who St. Nicholas was (very basic, like 6 pages long). It is a fun thing to do and I get excited just about the small gifts in the stockings!

This is another St. Nicholas book I want to get in the next year or so:The Legend of St. Nicholas: A Story of Christmas Giving.

I love spreading out the gifts over the entire advent season so that each one is appreciated individually.

2) I have a child-friendly nativity set made by Playmobile that the boys can actually touch and manipulate. (Warning! Choking Hazard Alert!) I have a “don’t touch” nativity set as well. Actually I have 3 toy versions and one “display” version.

I use the nativity set to tell the Christmas story. First, I display the empty stable. About a week before Christmas, Joseph and Mary appear in the room somewhere. You have to find them! Every day they are moved closer to the stable, until Christmas Eve, when they make it to their destination. Of course I add the baby Jesus and angels on Christmas morning. I mean, he wasn’t born yet before Christmas morning, right?

After Christmas, the wise men appear in the room and make their journey to the stable, until they finally arrive on Epiphany. And don’t you know, the wise men brought gifts? It’s a good reason to save some of the Christmas loot for a few extra days! Or, you could hit the after Christmas sales and score some “wise men gifts” at “wise mama” prices.

I am debating doing all of our gifts on Epiphany. Christmas Day and Christmas Eve are busy visiting grandparents. Things get a little crazy. Epiphany can be our special family day.

How do you deal with dividing time between various relatives and your immediate family on the holidays?
