Learning to play a musical instrument has all kind of benefits for kids.
If you are like me, you want your kids to be exposed to music but you don’t have $500 to plunk down on a cello, and you would rather pay off your car than buy a piano.
Laura Yeh, director of the St. Louis School of Music, concedes, "In this economy, music lessons and musical instrument purchases and rentals might be out of reach, but there are alternatives," she says.
Enter the ocarina!
I was once in a tea house in China when the owner brought out his 8-year-old daughter and insisted she give me an impromptu concert on her ocarina. I had never seen one before that moment, but I was extremely impressed by the beautiful music coming out of this “gourd” being held by a child.
The Art of Ocarina for Young Children is a method book is specially designed for young beginners.
It includes ten step-by-step lessons that teach about how to read music and how to play songs on a six-hole ocarina, a fingering chart, and more than 30 well known songs. You also get tips for practicing and a 6-hole plastic ocarina, all for $30 .
No prior musical knowledge is required, and there is a demonstration CD included.
Jojo is really excited about his ocarina, and has become quite a fan of Heather’s Ocarina YouTube channel.
He wants to know when he can get other cool ocarinas like the ones Heather plays in the videos. I told him he had to earn them kind of like how he just got yellow belt in Tae Kwon Do.
