I love the “classic” artists from Motown records.
Think of Stevie Wonder and Marvin Gaye; fabulous voices with amazing range, accompanied by contagious beats.
Corneille Nyungura is a new artist on Motown, but he isn’t new to the music world.
Corneille has an impressive biography and many previous career accolades.
Corneille Nyungura was born in 1977 in Germany, living there for six years before moving to his parents’ native Rwanda.
Already by the age of 16, Corneille was a budding musician, recording his first songs in a studio in Kigali and receiving an award from Rwanda’s national television station.
Only months later, in 1994, a group of soldiers broke into his home and massacred his entire family, including his Tutsi father, his Hutu mother and all his brothers and sisters.
Corneille survived only because he was hidden behind the sofa, and was forced to flee Rwanda on foot, walking for days to reach Zaire (Democratic Republic of the Congo).
In Zaire he was able to contact friends of his parents living in Germany, who sponsored him to come be a part of their family in Europe.
After 3 years in Germany, Corneille went to university in Canada where he had great success singing and composing in French!
This man’s life astounds me; The Birth Of Cornelius is Corneille’s very first English album, and I really like it!
Corneille’s life influences and love for Prince, Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder, and old French ‘chanson’ classics make The Birth Of Cornelius a unique album that comes from a very real place.
I was struck by how the music of The Birth Of Cornelius has a retro groove, but the lyrics are about both timeless and modern topics (I heard a mention of TiVo in there…).
The Birth Of Cornelius will definitely become a part of my regular rotation.

What a heartbreaking and yet resilient story he has. I’d love to hear, “I’ll Never Call You Home Again,” as that probably expresses a lot about his life.
