Shrinky Dinks Party!

SD1Indiana Jonas celebrated five years of life on October 25th.

To honor the occasion, we had a small party at our house. I told him that he could invite 5 friends, and he came up with a guest list of 4 people.

I kept suggesting other friends to make the 5th guest, but he denied them all.

The party was low key and low stress. The kids came over and  we had a “favortivity” (party favor + activity in one!) planned: a cool Shrinky Dinks party kit!

I remember Shrinky Dinks from my childhood, and was pleased to learn that they are still around!
SD2The Enchanted Kingdom Party Pack that we got is from Joobli Studio, a boutique toy development company that specializes in entertaining products that inspire imagination and creativity.

I was really pleased with the Enchanted Kingdom Joobli Party Pack. It retails for $18.95 and includes 8 themed invitations and envelopes, a themed poster to decorate the party room, 32 original images for tracing, 8 ball chains for guests to make party favors and 8 Shrinky Dinks sheets.

SDI filled out the invitations and slipped them into the kids’ bags at preschool. Pretty handy since my usual method of inviting people to my home is via email. But these are my son’s school mates and I don’t know their parents e-mail addresses.

The kit itself is made for the kids to trace or draw freehand the images they want to color and bake, but since my guests were young, I traced a medley of images on each sheet, and made a bag tag template for each child with their name already written on it.

The kids just had to color, cut and bake.

Baking it is the cool part, so as the adult present I got a front row seat at the oven. The Shrinky Dinks start to curl when they shrink so I flattened them with a metal spatula while they were still warm.

Other activities at Jojo’s party included eating stuff, playing with Jojo’s toys, and a few songs by Papa on the guitar.

It was hard to choose which Party Pack to use: there are several great themes like Wild West, Tiki Island, Enchanted Kingdom, Circus Jubilee or Christmas.

Creative Child Magazine awarded its Seal of Excellence to the Enchanted Kingdom Fun Pack and Circus Jubilee Party Pack, and TDMonthly Magazine’s counted the collection among the “Top 10 Artsy Toys for Toy Fair 2008.”

If you aren’t having a party, Joobli’s Fun Packs (retail price $17.95) come in a handy package that includes a foldout poster, 32+ original images for tracing, 6 sheets of shrinkable plastic, foolproof make-and-bake instructions and 8 ball chains to make bag tags. The themes available in Fun Pack from are Wild West, Tiki Island, Enchanted Kingdom and Circus Jubilee.

I think the Christmas Fun Pack ($17.95) and the Christmas Refill Pack ($9.95) would be a great way for kids to make really unique presents for loved ones. There’s a foldout Christmas poster, 24 original images and even a Christmas poem.

I think the wild west would go best for my kiddo. I would invite some of his friends over from preschool, just because! Kids love to have play dates and it’s hard to get friends over because we live farther away than the other kids do from each other.

    Happy Birthday, JoJo!

I’d love to try the Tiki Island or Enchanted Kingdom fun kits. I loved Shrinky Dinks when I was little and I am sure Roo and even Jasper would love them now.

I’d love to win the Shrinky Dinks Christmas Fun Pack. We drive 800 miles to spend the holidays with our kids and grandkids and I love to bring along some craft things to do with the grandkids. I loved Shrinky Dinks when my kids were little and would like to introduce the grandkids to them.

Aw, happy birthday Jojo! What a great idea for a party.

I loved Shrinky Dinks growing up, and didn’t get to do them much since my mom was quite busy keeping 5 kids away from the oven.

I’d love to win the Christmas pack to make some ornaments for Soren’s little tree. It would be fun to do with a few of his friends.
