Read More Than The Cereal Box

I was a voracious reader as a child. It gave me a great vocabulary with words such as voracious.
I read absolutely everything everywhere. I read the publisher’s clearing house mail details. At breakfast time I read the newspaper and the packaging of various food items, including the cereal box.

Over the past seven years, Cheerios has done a wonderful thing with their Spoonfuls of Stories program.
Over 35 million children’s books have been given away free inside cereal boxes, making their way into the hands of children from all socio-economic levels.
Cheerios is WIC approved, so that means that even families below the poverty line had access to these free, quality children’s books.
Cheerios has also donated nearly $3 million to First Book, a non-profit organization that provides books to children from low-income families.

Isn’t that exciting? Another extremely exciting element of Spoonfuls of Stories is the New Author Contest!

Cheerios is calling for previously unpublished, up-and-coming children’s book authors to submit their best stories!

Entries are being accepted March 16 through July 15, 2009 and will be judged on appropriate story and content for children ages 3-8, emotional connection, writing quality, uniqueness, and read-aloud potential. More details on the contest can be found at www.spoonfulsofstoriescontest.com.

The prize is $5,000 and the opportunity to have your story reviewed by Simon & Schuster Children’s Publishing.
Last year’s winner, Shellie Braeuner, signed a contract with Simon & Schuster. Her winning story, The Great Dog Wash, will be released this summer.

One Mom Most Traveled reader will win a paperback Spoonfuls of Stories edition of The Great Dog Wash and three other great children’s books!

1) To enter to win these four fabulous children’s books, leave a comment telling me your favorite children’s book, or your favorite children’s book character. (You may enter once a day - subsequent entries don’t require you to answer the question).

One winner will be chosen at random.

This giveaway is open to US entrants.
This contest will close at 11:59 pm CST, on May 6, 2009

Thank you to My Blog Spark for this review and giveaway opportunity!

We are a family of voracious readers! I am so glad that all three of my kids LOVE reading. They all love to read on their own, even my 5 year old son. My favorite children’s book is “Mommy’s Best Kisses”. I used to read it every night to my son when he was a baby and we still read it sometimes. He gets a little grin on his face every time. :)

My favorite Children’s book is called: I LOVE YOU MARY JANE. I loved it so much I’d check it out from the Library each time my mom and I went. One week I got so use to having it in my house that when we were done reading I put it back on my book shelf instead of where the Library books go. I can’t recall if I did it on purpose or not, but years later when I was in my early 20’s I was going through my book case and found the Library book I had put there so long ago!

well, my kids think I’m nuts most of the time so that, I’m able to sign up for books for everyone here to read, & then we’d pass them along to the rest of our extremely large family! Please consider us in your lists of people to give this to! I’d know we’d read everything and anything that comes into our home.

My favorite book was Grimm’s Fairy Tales which I read over and over again until the pages nearly wore thin. The funny thing is my mother still had that book until two years ago when had to move to a facility for Alzheimer
patients and my sister forgot to save it from being auctioned. I really wish I still had it…wonderful memories of reading that book under the covers by flashlight.

We definitely encourage reading in our house - I am happy to say that it is one of our favorite activities as I have always used storytime as a reward for my little ones. Some of my favorite stories are Goodnight Moon and On The Day You Were Born - I usually add both of these books to baby shower gifts to help encourage early reading for all of my friends too! Thanks for the great giveaway! I have actually entered the New Author Contest sponsored by Spoonfuls of Stories after reading your blog post with the children’s story that I wrote last fall!! This makes this giveaway even more exciting for me.
