Quilting and Knitting for Tweens

A homemade holiday can be very special; but what about children who are old enough to think beyond basic nursery school crafts?
Sure, the little acrylic paint hand prints on an apron for grandma is cute from a 4-year-old, but children ages nine and older would feel proud to give beautiful, useful gifts they hand knit or quilted all by themselves!

Show Me How: Knitting and Show Me How: Quilting are two great books from Sixth & Spring Books that teach children ages 9 and beyond useful skills in storybook form.

These books are amazing, and though they are written with children in mind (each book is 72 pages and packed with colorful illustrations), adults might take away lessons as well!

In Show Me How: Knitting, the main character Mary Ruth and her brother Jacob go to Grandma’s house for the weekend.
When a a storm strikes, and all the lights go out, Grandma saves the children from boredom by teaching Mary Ruth and Jacob how to knit.

At first, Mary Ruth is afraid it might be hard. But she discovers it’s fun…and easy too.

The how-to book features Mary Ruth’s knitting instructions written “just the way Grandma taught me,” with all the basic techniques and directions for four projects: a Barkley Ball, Hotsy-Totsy Hat, Tasseled Skinny Scarf, and Kitty Comforter.

In Show Me How: Quilting Mary Ruth’s classmate Ashley needs an operation and will be away for a whole month.
Mary Ruth wants to do something special for Ashley to let her know that she will be missed.
Grandma suggests the school class make a friendship quilt, with every person contributing a block with a personal message for Ashley.
The friendship quilt is a huge success; and Show Me How: Quilting provides kid-friendly instructions so that readers can create right along with the story.

Show Me How: Quilting guides you through the whole process; from making your first stitches to making a pillow, blanket and other great projects.

When I was a young girl, everyone made friendship bracelets. How much better if we had sat around knitting or quilting for hours? How special to preserve these crafts and give your child some useful skills.

One thing that impresses me about Waldorf education is that they endeavor to teach the whole child, which is described as, “head, hands, and heart”. Each year children in Waldorf schools learn how to make something with their hands, from knitting to woodworking.

With these books, I am inspired to pick up a pair of knitting needles myself!

For a chance to win one of these books (your choice!), visit Sixth & Spring Books and comment here with another Sixth & Spring Books title that interests you. Also tell me which book you want to win (knitting or quilting).

One winner will be chosen at random.

This giveaway is open to US residents.

This contest will close on December 16th, 12 midnight CST.

*Congrats to Buttercup!*

    Ah so many great books!!!

It’s hard for me to decide between the giveaway books. I’m an avid quilter. Since I love quilting so much, the quilting book would be my first instinct choice for my tween daughter but I know that she would also really enjoy learning to knit. I don’t know how to teach her because I don’t know how to do it myself. So I guess I would go with the knitting book.

I guess I can’t say everything in the store either so I will go with Crafting On the Go! Ribbon.

Thanks for such a great giveaway!!
