Nourishing Hope For Autism

Rather recently I was enlightened that some of Jojo’s quirks and behavior challenges are likely being caused by Sensory Processing Disorder.
Sensory Processing Disorder (SPD) is currently not officially on the Autism Spectrum, but there are some experts who believe it might be related.
I’m my frenzied mommy-layman research, I am fascinated by the connection of diet/nutrition and the physical and behavior implications that result in children.

To think that nutrients affect the brain! What a responsibility as a parent!
I thought before about trying to put Jojo on a special diet to see if it was beneficial, but the idea was pretty overwhelming and I didn’t even know how to begin.
Nourishing Hope for Autism: Nutrition Intervention for Healing Our Children is a book worth taking a look at if you want to try out any of these special diets: GFCF/gluten-free, casein-free (wheat-and-dairy-free), Specific Carbohydrate Diet, Body Ecology Diet, Feingold, Low Oxalate, Weston A. Price Diet, and a few others like Raw Food or Yeast Free diets.
Nourishing Hope for Autism: Nutrition Intervention for Healing Our Children dedicates a page or two to explaining each diet and has a section that addresses “Picky Eaters”, which is a necessity since many children on the Autism Spectrum are also affected by sensory issues that might make them reject certain textures or even colors of food.
Nourishing Hope for Autism: Nutrition Intervention for Healing Our Children is a guide for how to choose which diet option is best for your child, and how to “evolve” your child’s diet to include the nutrition he or she needs.
I was also excited to see that Nourishing Hope for Autism: Nutrition Intervention for Healing Our Children addresses possible sources of toxins in the home, explaining the detriments of various food additives and cleaning supplies that might have negative affects on a body with ASD.

I am a “beginner” at this, and I think that Nourishing Hope for Autism: Nutrition Intervention for Healing Our Children is a good beginners guide to navigating these special diets. There is expert information and also practical advice about cooking (and getting the child to actually eat).
From the press release:

Nourishing Hope is:

1. The first biomedical autism diet intervention guide for parents and physicians
2. A practical application of diets and cooking instruction
3. In depth research and science backed literature
4. The first and only autism cooking class DVD on the market
5. A book and DVD specifically created by a veteran Defeat Autism Now! (DAN!) Practitioner

I can’t speak of personal experience since I don’t have an ASD child, but parents have reported that following these changes in diet have had positive results such as:

  • Improved digestion
  • Reduced gastrointestinal pain
  • Less rash or eczema
  • Physical pain relieved
  • Agressive behavior ceases
  • More language
  • Ability to focus
  • Sleeping through the night
  • Making eye contact
  • Easier toilet training

Author Julie Matthews is an autism nutrition expert and Defeat Autism Now! (DAN!) Practitioner whose new book examines how and why autism diets work to help recover children from symptoms of autism.

I would love to get this book and pass it along to my daughter. My granddaughter is having so many issues and I think this book may possibly help because I do think that certain foods trigger certain behaviors in children. Thanks

Well, it might’ve done me some good when I was growing up, but now that I’m an adult with Asperger Syndrome, I’ve gotten used to compensating for my various tics and quirks…
