Motherhood…on DVD

motherhood I watched Motherhood and Julie & Julia on the same day, while flying from Bangkok to Los Angeles.

As a blogger I was excited and inspired to watch blogging-women-themed movies.

I found Motherhood to be the more stressful of the two films, but maybe it hit too close to home. Or maybe not.

In Motherhood, Uma Thurman plays “Eliza,” a frazzled NYC mom whose days as a writer seem like a lifetime ago.

Motherhood takes place over one very full, mommy-frazzling day.

Two of the main tasks that Eliza has before her on this day are 1) planning and hosting a birthday party for her daughter and 2) writing a 500 word essay about what motherhood means to her.

Try as I might, I couldn’t manage to see Eliza in a sympathetic light. Motherhood did have it’s funny moments but Eliza’s emotional outbursts were largely stress-inducing.

In an interesting marketing experiment, the Motherhood DVD comes with lots of coupons for saving money on baby products. The coupons are also in CD-Rom form on the DVD.

I think a relapse in potty training was the worst. All of a sudden, he’d pee randomly in his pants. *Sigh* glad it was a short-lived phase.

My most stressful parenting moments are when all three of my child have something going on where they are going in three different directions. There is only one of me and so little time to get to three places at once. Whew.

Just a few days ago my son destroyed our house…every single room was a disaster. Then I got a call from our realtor saying that someone wanted to come see our house in 1 1/2 hours…talk about stress! I think my heart was running a mile a minute while I ran around just as fast! Trying to clean and keep a toddler happy (and from making any more messes) was not fun….Ahh…welcome to parenthood!

I really don’t get stressed out. I look forward to everyday and spending it with my children. Things get broken, that’s a given. They can be replaced, but children can’t!

I’m not a parent, but as a nanny I have had to work with potty training, older children lying, parents views and my views clashing, children failing school…the list goes on and on.

When my daughter was 2, we went to Target to pick up a few items…it was right before Thanksgiving. My daughter saw a Christmas tree display and decided she wanted one NOW! I told her we would have tree for Christmas, but were not buying one of those. She began screaming, threw herself on the floor and began kicking and writhing. I was stunned and had no idea what to do as the other shoppers stared at her display. So, I said, “Mommy is going to continue shopping, when are finished you can join us.” I said this in a calm voice…although I was totally freaked out. Then I turned and began pushing my shopping cart in the opposite direction…hoping she would follow. A few seconds later, she walked up and said, “Can I ride in the cart mommy?” Just like nothing had happened! Kids. :-)

    Thank you. :-)

My most stressful “mommy” moments are when my youngest (four) is throwing a tantrum while I’m trying to deal with a school issue (behavioral) on the phone regarding my teen. It seems to happen WAY TOO often! It drives me bonkers… I’m trying to talk with the school guidance counselor/principal so we can decide how to deal with the situation and at the same time calm down a HYPER pre-k’r going through the “me” phase so I can hear!

I think the most stressful moments were foodshopping. I remember when my daughter was an infant, getting up to the register with a cart full of food, and she’d be screaming at the top of her lungs. So stressful, trying to calm her, unload the cart and pay.
