Over one year ago (March, 2007 to be exact) I discovered an online book seller that made me really REALLY excited. It combined two of my favorite things into one store: CHEAP and BOOKS. I happily browsed the selections at www.BookCloseouts.com and selected two huge lift-the-flap books to keep Jojo occupied an upcoming airplane trip (remember my Must-Have Travel Diversions for Children Aged 2-5?).
I was so excited that I scored these two books for such a bargain, but when my order arrived, only one book had been sent, I was charged the same amount of shipping as if I had received BOTH books, and the book that made it was VERY used (the lift-the-flaps were torn up, bent, some of them ripped). I was shocked and disappointed!
I contacted www.BookCloseouts.com and gave them a friendly email pointing out the problem. I was not irritated at this point because I fully assumed that www.BookCloseouts.com would make good on my order, and probably be shocked and appalled that I got such a dud book.
I waited for an answer.
And waited.
And waited…
Every month I got an update from www.BookCloseouts.com informing me of the latest sales.
But I didn’t get a response to my complaint. FINALLY, LAST WEEK I decided that SEVENTEEN MONTHS IS LONG ENOUGH!
I unsubscribed from the mailing list.
When I unsubscribed, a little window popped open and asked me to type in the reason I had decided to cancel my subscription to the www.BookCloseouts.com mailing list.
Well.
This was my ONE LAST CHANCE to really LET THEM HAVE IT.
This is me when I’m irritated:
I ordered 2 books from BookCloseouts.com and they arrived in TERRIBLE SHAPE. They were obviously used and parts were TORN. I complained via email and no one ever responded. This was OVER A YEAR AGO. I am extremely dissatisfied. I will NEVER order anything from BookCloseouts.com . When I first discovered the site, I told everyone I knew how great it was, but when I actually received the books they were crap. I can get better quality books at a yard sale or Goodwill. I plan to post about this terrible experience on my Mommy Review blog.
Thanks for ignoring me and stealing my money, CanCan
Do you love that part where I “threaten” book closeouts with my fierce blogging abilities? You KNOW I mean biz-nas! I bet they totally knew who was winning the Cool Contest at THIS party! (side note: I’m always trying to get another blogger who shall remain anonymous to compete against me in a Lame Off, where we list our lamest qualities and have a vote to see who is the most lame).
I even included my email address on what was supposed to be an anonymous complaint form, but I just wanted to give www.BookCloseouts.com one more chance to redeem themselves.
But then, something unexpected happened.
I got a reply!
Hello CanCan,
Although our unsubscribe process is completely anonymous, you included your email in the body of the message so I thought I would send you a reply.
I personally go through all the comments we get and I have to say that I do appreciate getting your message.
There is no excuse for us providing the poor or complete lack of customer service that you received.
We’ve always prided ourselves on providing excellent customer service (our team is in-house, not outsourced) but your message reminds me that we are not perfect and that we still have room for improvement.
Our email filters can be aggressive and sometimes emails don’t get through to us.
But instead of making excuses, I would rather offer you a $15 gift certificate for use on our site.
You can use it yourself or give it away to anyone you like.
Also please do not consider this an attempt to change your blog comments or your mind about us.
I am simply offering this to you because it’s something that should have been done for you over a year ago.
I can appreciate blogs such as yours and respect them for their honesty.
But on a personal level, I am sorry your experience was not favorable and I do hope you accept my apology on behalf of myself and bookcloseouts.com and maybe one day you might reconsider shopping with us again and give us a chance to redeem ourselves.
Please note, I do need you to reply to me in order for me to issue the gift certificate, as I will be sending it through email and need to confirm you are getting this.
Your email address has been removed from our mailings.
And so the dance began! BookCloseouts.com was wooing me back with sincerity and humility, and also free merchandise. I was powerless against them…
I also had never considered the fact that MAYBE they actually DIDN’T GET my first email. I’m particularly sympathetic because my work installed some crazy powerful spam filters that I can’t adjust. I miss a lot of personal correspondence…
I formulated my strategic reply:
Thanks for your reply. I put my email address on the form just to give Book Closeouts one last chance to redeem themselves, and I do appreciate you making the effort. I was really taken aback that my original complaint was overlooked, but I will concede that it could have been lost rather than ignored. I’m glad that this story can have a happy ending; I would like to post the entire saga on my blog.
I do a lot of marketing on my blog via product reviews and sponsored giveaways. I am not paid for the reviews, but I do get to sample the products and then tell my views about them. I travel a lot (I’m actually in South East Asia right now with insomnia: it is 1 a.m.) so I focus many of my reviews on products that would be helpful while traveling with children. The books I ordered from Book Closeouts originally were 2 large lift-the-flap books which I consider to be indispensable when flying 17 hours with a preschooler.
I appreciate your offer of a $15 gift certificate; this compensates for my botched order that was a little over $9. Would Book Closeouts be interested in doing a giveaway on my blog for another gift certificate?
My blog is http://MomMostTraveled.com
Look at that! I upped the ante for YOU, my readers! So selfless and hopelessly awesome of me!
Hi CanCan,
I’m glad you got back to me.
Wow traveling with children…17 hours… I flew a few times (only 2 hours) with my 1yr old daughter and if I didn’t have something to amuse her with (lift-the-flap books are great) I would have been asking for a parachute.
In light of this situation I went ahead and made you up a $20 gift certificate instead of $15 for you to use.
And I think it’s only right that we give you a $25 gift certificate for a giveaway on your blog.
You had me at “free gift certificate”, BookCloseouts.com customer service and/or marketing director!
I have to express what a rare and most amazing opportunity this is to win a $25 Gift Certificate from www.BookCloseouts.com!
So www.BookCloseouts.com and I are on good terms again. If www.BookCloseouts.com asks me to the Interweb Prom, I will say YES!
Firstly, as you can see I suffered some mental angst for 17 months in order to bring you this giveaway. Secondly, www.BookCloseouts.com doesn’t really do giveaways, so this could be a once in a life time event on the blogosphere! (blogmosphere?) They have a lot of stuff on sale for $1 right now!
If you would like a chance to win this RARE $25 Gift Certificate from www.BookCloseouts.com, go visit the site and comment here with the title of one book that you want to get AND THE PRICE at BookCloseouts.com.
One winner, who follows the directions, will be selected by random number generator.
This contest will close on Saturday, August 23, 12 midnight CST.
*Congrats, Laura (non blogger)! Laura’s comment was, “I’d start with The Teacher’s Calendar School Year 2004-2005, for $6.99! It’s not out of date because of the year, the ideas keep. I’m going to school this year to become a teacher and I can’t wait to stuff my head full of great ideas!”*

Thanks for sharing the whole story with us. There are several books I’d like from BookCloseouts.com — two are Cheese Glorious Cheese by Paula Lambert (hardcover for $8.99) and A Taste of Cheese by Fiona Becket (boxed set for $3.99).
I ordered a number of books from Bookcloseouts.com for Christmas presents last year — they all arrived quickly, in good condition and I was thrilled with their service. It’s nice to know that someone there paid attention to you (finally) so you could get closure and bring us this giveaway.
