IMG_8471 The transition from highchair to grown-up table may not be one of the hallmark moments of a baby’s life, but I’ve found it to be one of the more annoying.

After all, you’re dining at least three times a day, and in our family, Buckley (our 14-month-old) takes most of her snacks at the table, too.
I found myself caught in the same conundrum every morning, noon, and night: resign myself to a messy, cheesy, gooey, slimy tabletop or attempt propriety with a real plate.  Option #2 sounds reasonable, IMG_8463 until you consider that said plate is bound to be dumped over, and likely to be broken (see option #1).
But.
Along comes Boon, a company that designs modern baby accessories without sacrificing playfulness for highbrow aesthetic, with their Saucer and Modware utensils.

The Saucer is, in Boonspeak, a “stay-put divided plate.”  What this means in Mommy world is: Buckley can’t easily push the plate across the table onto the floor, thanks to the plastic slip-resistant base.  Nor can she IMG_8484 lift it by the edge, since the plate’s curvature has no edges for her mischievous little fingers to grasp in their mission of mealtime destruction.  I totally loved it!

And I like to think that Buckley feels a little more grown-up eating from a plate than all IMG_8486 animal-like off the table. The saucer is the perfect size for snacks and breakfast, but I did find that during lunch and dinner I had to refill Buckley’s plate because not all of her food would fit.

Buckley inched even further up the dinner manner scale with the Modware toddler utensils.  We had been experimenting with regular silverware, which was semi-effective, but steak knives just aren’t a good idea. Just kidding, DHR. But even the seemingly harmless tines of a fork strike me as a bit hazardous in her hands.

The Modware utensils are oh-so-safe, and Buckley was able to get an awesome grip on the fat handles.  She actually fed herself an entire batch of applesauce!
One awkward transition into adulthood down, one thousand to go.

Boon wants to giveaway a Saucer plate and matching set of ModWare to one Mom Most Traveled reader!

1.) To win this hip and functional feeding set ($10.98 value), leave a comment about one of your child’s first experiences with dining at the table. (You may enter once a day - subsequent entries don’t require you to answer the question).

Please don’t just comment with “Enter me” or “Sounds great”. That totally annoys me. Those entries are not eligible to win.

One winner will be chosen at random.

This giveaway is open to those with a US or Canadian mailing address.

This contest will close at 11:59 pm CST, on Earth Day, April 22, 2009

*Closed! Congrats to Amy P!

WOW what a cool little item! I’d love to win it.

My daughter’s table dining experiences always seemed to include food being spat from her mouth onto the table… all nicely chewed up and gooey. ICK!!

The first time my son ate at the table was great. Our entire family decided to go out to brunch and my son was just to heavy to be held the whole meal so we brought a booster seat for him. he sat so nicely and ate a plateful of scrambled eggs and a little bit of a whoopie pie. It was cute.

We made the mistake of teaching my son the hand signal for “All Done.” He figured out that this will get him out of his high chair. So now, regardless of whether he’s full or not, when the whim to escape crosses his mind he signals “All Done.” Now the only place he wants to eat his meals is sitting in Daddy’s lap at the table!

Both my little ones first experience eating spaghetti turned out the same. They ditched the spoon and went at it with their hands. They each were covered in sauce and had to go straight to the bath tub! :-)

My kids early experiences with eating at the table were messy but fun! I always loved watching them learn to eat. They would make such a mess but how else can they learn but to just do it? :)

While we haven’t tried dining at our table with our little man yet - only 8 months old - we have at a restaurant and it was fun. I say that because he had a huge cleared area in front of him & i just fed him with my fingers. Not a disaster, but it could have been. Thanks! thebubbledies(at)gmail(dot)com

My son’s first experiences at the table involved everyone present wearing bibs! He was, and still is at times, a very messy eater. Somehow, we’d find food in his ears, his armpits, between his toes! It was amazing.

My child tries to be neat at the table. He doesn’t always succeed, but what I find hardest to deal with is his squirminess! I’ll happily clean up spilt yoghurt, but trying to keep him from sitting on the table, or putting his feet up on it, or sticking his hands into my plate is the biggest challenge. So far, I’ve had a bit of success with talks about table manners. Once he masters those, then I’ll deal with the messes!

Just recently I bought my daughter a new set of silverware - still kid silverware, but with metallic tines on the fork, you know? She was sitting in her chair already and was so overcome with excitement that she started flailing about…and promptly stabbed herself in the hand. Needless to say, she’s learned her lesson about being careful with one’s silverware!
