I would like for us as a family to try to learn Spanish, so I think it would be a good idea to place cards with the english and spanish names on the cooresponding item.

One word at a time. Right now we’re trying to get him talking at all but we’re frequently doing it repetitively- have him repeat something we want him to say word by word so he can try the pronunciation out with us before using it on his own. A lot he does on his own but this has seemed to work well for the polite/niceity phrases.

My grandsons enjoy Dora and Diego so they get some Spanish practice watching them. And the daycare is teaching them too but they could use some extra practice at home with these DVDs.

I am a teacher at Head Start where out of 20 kids 10 of them are Hispanic. I also work with a teacher who is Puerto Rican. I have picked up some Spanish from her and from working with such a vast majority of ELL students. At home I work with my 5 year old on small things such as counting, colors, etc. in Spanish. She is also exposed to it in her class where she has ELL students. They are also working on sign language in her class since one of the Hispanic kids is also deaf. I am also a Facebook fan of Boca Beth. I had the honor of seeing her in motion at the Alabama Pre-K Conference this April. She is great!

Make friends who speak other languages and spend lots of time with them. Eat at international restaurants and read the menus. Listen to music and read children’s books in other languages. Combine words and phrases in other languages with your native language as you learn them so they stay in your mind. Associate words in other languages with a picture or object - it’s easier to remember with a picture, not just the translation.

We just ordered the maracas from Beth and the kids love them. We are going to let the kids use them as a small and large group activity to go along with Beths CD’s and DVD. We also ordered Boca and another CD. She is great. The Hispanics love to hear things in their native language. I think it makes them feel impowered to hear it.
