Did you know that I have an MA in Teaching? I do. More importantly, did you know that I am nerdily obsessed with educational products for children? Well, I am.
My ABSOLUTE FAVORITE series of workbooks/activity books for children are from Kumon. Kumon has APPEALING and FUN workbooks for children in a variety of ages from Pre-K and beyond!
THE KUMON METHOD is what makes these Workbooks so unique and effective. This Method is a proven learning system developed in Japan to help each child reach his or her full potential. Concepts are introduced in a step-by-step manner that allows the child to master each in turn without getting frustrated. Before long, children gain confidence in their abilities and are motivated to learn on their own.
I first discovered Kumon workbooks when I was looking for something to challenge my 2-year-old. Kumon offers the First Steps series of workbooks for children ages 2 and up! Our favorites are Lets Cut Paper!, Lets Sticker and Paste!, and Let’s Fold! (basic origami!). Whenever we did “lessons” out of the workbooks, my son would inevitably ask to do another, and another, and another!

Now that Jojo is almost 4, we have started to explore the next series of Kumon workbooks: Basic Skills. These are books designed for use by children aged 3, 4 and 5 (some of the books are designated for 4, 5, and 6). Our favorites are Amazing Mazes (for developing pencil skills and reasoning ability), My Book of Numbers 1-30 (introduction to reading and writing numbers 1-30), and My Book of Rhyming Words (learning to say and write rhyming words, such as pig & dig).
I was really impressed the first time Jojo did a page from My Book of Numbers 1-30. The early pages are set up like dot-to-dot pictures. He followed the instructions and said each number aloud has he reached each dot. I didn’t even know he could DO a dot-to-dot!

Jojo feels a real sense of accomplishment when he completes the exercises in his Kumon workbooks. The pages are so colorful and appealing that he would rather do “work” in a Kumon book than a regular coloring book. I especially love bringing these workbooks along on trips, because they hold Jojo’s attention so much longer than a traditional coloring book.
One of my favorite products from Kumon are the ABC’s Write and Wipe! Flash Cards. Jojo has been using these ever since he was 2 1/2. We saw them at an older friend’s house and I was amazed that Jojo sat down and was able to carefully trace each letter with the write and wipe pen. I can’t explain it, but Jojo enjoys these flash cards so much that for a period of several months, he insisted on having them at the breakfast table every morning.

I have already purchased the Kumon Numbers 1-30 Write and Wipe Flashcards to give to Jojo on his 4th birthday in October! I predict that they will be just as much of a hit!
I can’t praise Kumon enough for their savvy, fun-to-use workbooks and flashcards. I love that they teach skills that children actually need to learn! Some friends have asked us how Jojo was able to learn all of his phonetic sounds and numbers at such an early age. Really, all we have done was provide him with FUN things to do that were also educational.
We are not a homeschooling family, but I believe that learning can t
ake place at any time, any where.
Kumon workbooks are an ideal way to combine FUN with LEARNING for your children.
I think next on our list will be Kumon workbooks related to Telling Time. Maybe I can start sleeping in once Jojo knows what “seven o’clock” means!
You can WIN two workbooks of your choice from Kumon Publishing!
To enter, browse the Kumon catalog and tell me the names of two products you think would be most interesting for your children!
One winner (who follows the instructions) will be chosen by random integer generator.
This contest will close on Friday, August 22, 12 midnight.
*Congrats to Blessings Abound who said… These are some areas we’re working on with my oldest daughter so these would fit us best: My First Book of Money: Counting Coins and Book of Money: Dollars and Cents. Thanks!*
