Joobles Organic Cotton Stuffed Toys: Fair Trade Has Never Been Cuter!

I am crazy for handmade toys; when I saw the adorable faces of the new line of Joobles friends from Fair Indigo, I was instantly smitten.

Responsible, Sustainable, Adorable™
I want to collect them all!
Joobles are handcrafted in Peru under fair trade conditions.

Joobles were first made by a Peruvian family of three, but the business has since expanded to provide jobs with living wages to hundreds of people in Peru.

Fair Indigo also contributes to the lives of these workers by donating free breakfasts and school supplies to their children.

Each incredibly soft animal is made with eco-friendly dyes and organic cotton grown in Peru. Calley the Cat stands 11” tall (as all the friends do) with adorable whiskers and a huggable green and yellow body. For parents hunting for eco-friendly toys, all of the Joobles are made with cotton grown without the use of pesticides, insecticides, herbicides, fertilizers, or other chemicals. Eliminating these chemicals is not only better for baby, but also for workers and for the environment.

Joobles are heirloom-quality toys made from 100% organic cotton, giving them comfortably soft, toxin-free bodies.

I can’t resist Joobles‘ friendly, smiling faces and eco-friendly dyed colors, and I was even more thrilled to learn that they cost only $29.
I have seen knit dolls at online boutiques that retail for twice that amount!

Deeds is a stuffed toy fanatic, so I am so excited to have this well made, organic, fair trade Joobles doll for him to enjoy!

If your child loves to play with dolls and plush animals, you can feel confident in giving them a Joobles for Christmas!

As I mentioned in my previous post, I met someone two weeks ago who works in a sweat shop. She is a twenty-two-year-old girl who sews upholstery for 12 hours per day, earning $25 per month.

The factory is not air conditioned or heated, and is surrounded by high walls and barbed wire. Usually the workers are “given” a place to sleep within the compound walls. These are very simple, shared accommodations that are in worse shape than homeless shelters in the USA.

I don’t know if she gets the weekends off. Probably not, because most blue collar workers in Laos have a 7 day work week. But even if she only works 5 days a week (60 hours), that is about ten cents an hour, right? I do not want to support the people who are making money off of her loss of human rights. If we purchase products made under these conditions, we share the blame that they continue.

I usually try to avoid tangents in my review posts but I think the term sweat shop is glossed over and joked about in the United States, but it is real.

Fair Indigo is giving one Mom Most Traveled reader the Joobles plush of their choice for Christmas!

To enter, visit www.fairindigo.com and click on the tab About Fair Trade to learn what this term really means and why you should care.
Also tell me the name of the Joobles character you would like to win!

Fair Indigo has informed me that because Joobles are hand made, certain styles might run out in the holiday shopping season. Please have a “back up” option in mind in case your first choice is not available.

One winner will be chosen at random.

*Congrats to Shari! (non blogger) Her extra entry for submitting this post to DIGG won it for her!*

This saddens me greatly. I think we’re all a bit naive and ignorant to conditions and just how some of the littlest things get made in other countries. Ideally we’d have most things made right here at home in the US, and it’d be better for our economy in the long run. Where we’d have more quality control as well.

I’m glad that you’ve brought this subject to everyone’s attention.

Icy the Penguin is super cute, as is Buzzy Bug. I love how there’s a penguin sweater to match too. That’s adorable.

I learned about fair trade during this election. We should all be conscience of what we buy and how it might affect others. We should also put pressure on big business like the super centers we all shop, to participate in fair trade.
On a lighter note- we like Jiffy the Giraffe ! Love the matching sweater :)

Businesses need to become stakeholders in their own organizations and actively play a wider role.
Equal wages seem to be in todays society- sadly it is not & it should be.

    I love Icy the Penguin

Again, thank you Candace for reminding us that when we purchase from those companies, we’re feeding the fuel.
I don’t think that was a tangent at all , it’s a wake up call.
What a wonderful review and I hope you get all your little Joobles because I’m sure they would serve as messengers.
I learned the definition of “fair” and those “employed” by sweat shops (more like prisoners) are certainly not being treated fairly.
How atrocious that for our “gain” anothers rights are taken. I’ll certainly be more conscious of what I purchase now.
After reading about the commodities, I see why it’s much easier to purposely pay farmers more than the going price and how difficult it would be to monitor the manufactured goods fair trade. Hats off to Fair Indigo!
My favorite would be Mel the Monkey although each one of them spoke to me, just as you have.

Fait Trade, I do so love Fair Trade stores. :) Fair Trade gives workers a living wage rather than a minimium one. Fair Trade stops the abuse of workers; exploitation of young works to long hours in unfavourable conditions for a sadly low, low pay. Fair Trade is allowing indiginous peoples to start selling and raising money to live. Fair Trade has set up programs to help widows learn trades and start up businesses so they can rise above the meager (and I do not mean meager by US living standards). I honestly could go on and on.
This site is wonderful and added to my list of Fair Trade stores to buy from.

My favourite Jooble is: Icy the Penguin with my back-up being Calley the Cat.

I THINK PERHAPS THE QUESTION MOST OF YOU SHOULD ASK IS, WHAT DO THE PEOPLE THAT HAVE THESE JOBS, IN THESE CONDITIONS THINK ABOUT “NOT” HAVING THE JOB AT ALL!!! WHAT WOULD THEIR LIFE BE LIKE WITH NOTHING? YES FAIR TRADE IS HELPFUL>>BUT ONLY HELPFUL. WITH THESE SUB JOBS ATLEAST THEY HAVE SOMETHING, A STARTING POINT> PEOPLE WORKING ARE NOT STARVING AND TOTALLY HOMELESS, THEY CAN STAND UP FOR THEMSELVES, THEY CAN FIND SOMEONE TO HELP THEM. FOR NOW, MAYBE, JUST MAYBE WE SHOULD LET THEM FIND INCOME AND FOOD THE BEST THEY CAN AND THEN PERHAPS FINE THE ABUSERS FOR THE CONDITIONS AND GIVE THAT BACK TO THE WORKERS IN THE FORM OF EDUCATION.
I QUESTION A DECISION TO NOT HELP PEOPLE BECAUSE OF WHO THEY WORK FOR, THEY NEED US MOST! I QUESTION NOT HELPING WHEN WE HAVE NOT SEEN FOR OURSELVES. I QUESTION HOW HAPPY THEY YOUNG WOMAN WAS TO BE MAKING $25.00 A MONTH>> COULD SHE DO BETTER? WHAT WOULD THAT BUY? WAS THAT A LOT OF MONEY IN HER COUNTRY?
OUR COUNTRY STARTED WITH A LOT OF THESE CONDITIONS TOO AND WORSE>> AND TIME AND EFFORT, AND EDUCATION CHANGED EVERYTHING FOR ALL OF US.
I HAVE ALWAYS BELIEVED IN HELPING OTHERS AND NOT AS ASKING WHAT THEY WOULD DO WITH THE MONEY. I HAVE NEVER INVESTIGATED FAIR TRADE, I DO NOT KNOW THEIR WORKS. I DO KNOW THE PERSON THAT HELPS ME, GIVES ME WORK! YOU CANNOT EAT RULES AND LIMITS. I WOULD RATHER WORK AND HAVE SOMETHING…
I KNOW I CANNOT WIN, I JUST WANTED TO GIVE ANOTHER WAY OF LOOKING AT THINGS.

GOD BLESS THE WORKERS IN THESE CONDITIONS AND MAY THEIR LIVES IMPROVE.

this is going to sound obvious, but fair trade is important to ensure that everyone gets compensated fairly, not equally, for the work that they do…right now, that isn’t always the case, which is quite sad with the advances we have made in the last 20 years or so.

Fair trade is paying fair wages, in the apparel industry here, for work. We should care because currently it’s a very small percentage of the textile/apparel industry! It’s on it’s way up, but needs more public interest and momentum to gain the support of larger apparel companies.

Would love to win Calley the Cat for my friend who’s due in February. Thanks!

I like the Fair Trades concept–minimum wage has not kept up with inflation and has become a joke!

  27. 27 Kathleen
    30 November 2008, 7:06 pm

You’re so right about the term sweat shop being a bit of a joke here in the US. It’s sad that we take for granted the cheapness of items, yet don’t really think about how they were made, either the human or environmental impact. I’m so impressed that the Joobles are so adorable AND made under the agreements of Fair Trade.

I think Fair Bear and Mel the Monkey are adorable, and I’d be glad to offer one of them a home with us! It would be nice to tell my son that they were made by fairly treated and fairly paid workers.

  28. 28 Kathleen
    30 November 2008, 7:09 pm

And in response to Charlotte, first off, DO NOT WRITE IN ALL CAPS!! IT SEEMS LIKE YOU’RE SHOUTING!!!

Secondly, we should do all we can to support fair trade. Yes, sweat shops may be the only income for these people, but it’s also Westerners insistence on the lowest price for everything that fuels sweat shops. Consider buying less and paying more for it (not necessarily you, Charlotte, but people in general).

I like that Fair Indigo advocates for the fair trade movement. They provide a list of companies they know to be also involved in fair trade and also have a list that others have provided. There is no excuse for us to purchase cheap goods at the expense of others. Regarding the Joobles, I like Buzzy Bug, Mooey Cow, Icy the Penguin . . . well, gosh, I like them all

Fair Trade means essentially fair pay for work in a safe environment, free of child abuse while enforcing fair labor practices. I abhor child abuse, in any form!

I like Mel the Monkey, or Mooey the Cow

I feel like buying fair trade items when possible is doing my part as an individual to help increase sustainability. I can’t sit back and wait for the corporate world to do it.

Fair Trade is so important for everyone around the globe. People have been working in sweat shops for far to long and companies have been getting away with it since people need to work to provide for their families. Workers deserve to be paid a fare wage for the work that they do. I refuse to buy from a company that doesn’t promote Fair Trade.
I like Pip the Dog the most.
Thank you for the great giveaway.

They are so cute…I love Mel the monkey. Fair trade means being paid an actual living wage rather than just a minimum wage required by that country’s law. It is only fair that someone who is willing to work hard should be able to support themselves and their children. Thanks for the chance! justicecw@hotmail.com

Bella the Bunny is too cute. The reason why fair trade is so important is because every worker deserves to be paid a fair wage for a fair day’s work, and we, as consumers, should not support products produced by employees who have not been fairly compensated. Thanks for the great product and the great giveaway!
