Most parents who adopt a child of a different nationality or ethnicity hope to teach their child one day about their cultural heritage.
Some would argue that children are color blind, so there is no need to celebrate diversity in children. In my experience, this is simply not the case.
My son was raised for the first 2 1/2 years of his life in Laos. He is Caucasian, but for a long time would point to pictures of Lao children and say that it was “Jojo”. When we spent a year in the U.S., Jojo (age 2 1/2 to 3 1/2) was suddenly aware of the differences between himself (”I have white hair.”) and other children in his preschool class (”She has brown skin.”).
It was also during this time that Jojo was very interested to know who was a “boy” and who was a “girl”; I think preschool is a time when children start to observe the world around them and make sense of it all. Some experts believe that ages 3 to 8 are some of the most important and formative years of a child’s life.
My experience in America is that many adults would rather ignore ethnic and cultural differences rather than celebrate them. I happen to quite enjoy learning about different cultures and have even spent 5 years in Asia as a minority there.
When we travel in Asia, Jojo gets special attention from everyone we meet because of his unusual (for Asia), blonde hair. I explain to him that some people have never seen someone with blonde hair before, and it makes them very happy.
I want to teach my biological children (and future adopted children) to appreciate other cultures, not to deny their existence.
If children see that we are uncomfortable answering questions about those who might look different than we do, it will cause them to think that these differences are something to be ashamed about; nothing could be further from the truth!
Richard Rawson co-founded JamboKids, a new toy company with a unique line of multicultural dolls and storybooks for children to address the needs of 45% of kids under the age of 5 who are part of a minority group.
Richard and his wife adopted their daughter, Rachel, from China in 2002.
The JamboKids dolls and storybook characters represent children from a range of cultures - Asian, African, Hispanic, North American, and Russian.
The JamboKids characters have adventures that help to inspire kids to appreciate differences in culture and see a model for life skills and values.
I got the Niecey doll and book set for my children. Niecey is African-American and lives in Mississippi. In her story, Niecey’s Surprise Pie, Niecey works hard to make a special pie to put smiles on the faces of the grumpy residents of Benevolent, Mississippi!
Niecey’s Surprise Pie is a sweet, inspiring story, and the 12″ soft fabric doll is a terrific addition.
JamboKids doll and book sets give parents, grandparents, and caregivers an opportunity to cuddle up and bond with their kids while encouraging a child’s curiosity, and imagination.
JamboKids also has “A Parent’s Guide to Promoting Positive Character Growth” available online for free.
Would you like to win a JamboKids doll and book set for a the child in your life?
To enter for your chance to win, visit the JamboKids store and leave a comment here with which doll and book set you would choose and why!
One winner will be chosen at random.
This giveaway is open to US residents.
This giveaway will close on January 20, 12 midnight CST.

I would have to choose the Rachel Doll from China because my niece’s name is Rachael. I think she would love hearing a story about another little girl named Rachel. They’re both about the same age, as well.
Thanks! :0)
10 January 2009, 7:48 am
I like Tilly. Actually, I like them ALL–such a great size for a doll, and they’re all so cute–I had a really hard time deciding, but went with Tilly because of her freckles, green dress, and appeal of her story.

I have a biracial family, Deja has often wondered why she doesn’t have blonde hair & blue eyes like me or some of her friends. Now she goes around telling people daddy’s “jeans” were stronger than mommy’s, and that she is wearing daddy’s “jeans” because she looks Latina. For her, I’d say the Luz doll would be her pick-since it reflects the Latino Culture and Maya of Central America, where daddy is from.

It was very difficult to choose but after a very hard elimination I would choose Anya. I guess it’s because I like her hat and I have an aunt who came from Russia during WWII and it reminds me of her. All of them are great for teaching children racial tolerance. Purchasing the whole group would be wonderful for a child.
11 January 2009, 3:42 am

Rachel Doll and Book Set - one because I like her story but also because my son is half Chinese and it would be a great thing to give to my niece to teach her about where her cousin’s family comes from. She really enjoys visiting with him and she is so good with my little snoogs.

Without hesitation I would choose the Rachel doll. My daugher, born in China, is obsessed with dragons right now. More importantly she is already, at the young age of 5, grappling with questions about her heritage and getting remarks from classmates about her skin and hair color. This would be a very timely addition to our household.
Thanks,

18 January 2009, 2:35 pm
I would like to win Anya Doll and Book Set, BECAUSE there are about 3 Russian student s in our huge elementary school system with NO translator and no one understand their culture. I think the book could be used to help the children relate better. Does it fix the school system, NO. Sadly, we are in a very wealthy school disctrict, so there is no excuse.
I speak Russian, but do not have a teaching degree in it, so I cannot “help”. So, when I saw this, I thought at least the younger kids would have a chance at understanding.
