Inspiring Stories on Scholastic DVD

Before I actually had children, I imagined that my kids would never watch television. They would be super geniuses who chose to do things like science experiments and oil paintings in their spare time.

But, once the children were old enough to communicate that yes, they did want some screen time, I began seeking out high quality DVD’s to educate and inspire.

The Scholastic Video Collection is composed entirely of such DVD’s, and The Man Who Walked Between the Towers… and More Inspiring Tales, geared toward ages 3-6, does not disappoint.

This DVD brings beautiful illustrations, inspiring stories, and award winning children’s literature into your home.

The Man Who Walked Between the Towers… and More Inspiring Tales has a “read along” feature which presents the words on the TV screen, highlighting each one as it is spoken. In essence, the DVD is “reading” to your child. This is the ultimate diversion when you need to give your voice a rest, in between story times!

The title story in The Man Who Walked Between the Towers… and More Inspiring Tales is from the book of the same name by Mordecai Gerstein.
The bookThe Man Who Walked Between the Towers won the Caldecott medal in 2004.
After watching the DVD version, I am eager to add the book to our family library!
The story relates Philippe Petit’s tight rope walk between Manhattan’s World Trade Center towers in 1974 in an enchanting, fairytale-like fashion.

“Once there were two towers side by side. They were each a quarter of a mile high… The tallest buildings in New York City.”

The beautiful, gently animated illustrations offer unique points-of-view that are amazing to behold.
The story also tastefully touches on the events of 9/11, with a simple statement,

“Now the towers are gone”

This story is captivatingly narrated by Jake Gyllenhaal.

The next tale on The Man Who Walked Between the Towers… and More Inspiring Tales is SNOWFLAKE BENTLEY, a book by Jaqueline Briggs Martin. This video interpretation is narrated by Sean Astin and is the true story of Wilson Bentley. Willie was a young boy growing up on a farm in Vermont when he became fascinated with snowflakes. Later, Willie begins photographing snowflakes through a microscope to study them scientifically. Snowflake Bently goes on to become the world’s famous snowflake authority!

Miss Rumphius is a gorgeous story by Barbara Cooney and is narrated by Claire Danes. This is a true story in which a remarkable woman, Alice Rumphius, travels the world and returns home with a desire to make the world a more beautiful place. Miss Rumphius beautifies her rocky corner of the earth and gives inspiration that we can all make the world more beautiful!

The Pot That Juan Built is a story by Nancy Andrews-Goebel, narrated by Alfred Molina. Juan is Juan Quezada, one of the best-known potters in Mexico.
The Pot That Juan Built tells his story in a “This is the House That Jack Built” rhythm and also includes more detailed descriptions.
Juan’s story is inspiring because he “used his creative gifts to transform his impoverished village of laborers into a thriving artists’ community“.

Additionally, the The Man Who Walked Between the Towers… and More Inspiring TalesDVD features two “extra bonus stories”; “Snowflake Bently: His Legacy” and “About Juan Quezada”.
Also on the DVD is a Spanish Version of Miss Rumphius.

I absolutely love Scholastic DVD’s, and I’m thrilled that one Mom Most Traveled reader will win his or her own copy of The Man Who Walked Between the Towers !

Please don’t just comment with “Enter me” or “Sounds great”. That totally annoys me. Those entries are not eligible to win.

One winner will be chosen at random.

This giveaway is open to those with a US mailing address.

This contest will close at 11:59 pm CST, March 27, 2009

*Congrats to Tracey (nonblogger)!*
