Happy Thanksgiving!

Hubs had to go to Cambodia during Thanksgiving to chaperone a Jr. basketball tournament.

I was on the cusp of a pity party, but was graciously invited to not one, but TWO Thanksgiving meals, one at 1pm and a second at 5pm!

Since I am a teacher in Laos, there aren’t all that many Americans around. That means that Thanksgiving isn’t actually a holiday here.

But, through creative bartering and trading of off-periods with my German/English/Jamaican co-teacher, I was able to leave school at 12:10 on Thanksgiving Day.

I took Jojo and myself by bicycle to our lunch soiree. Lunch was slated to begin at 1pm but due to circumstances was served at 2:40.

In the mean time, we were challenged to a contest of making Thanksgiving hats out of construction paper. You can see our handiwork.

I left the feast tired and full, but pedaled on back home just in time to whip up some Stove Top stuffing before being picked up for the 5pm feast.

Deeds, Jojo, and myself were all in attendance. The evening feast even had a kids table, which the thoughtful hostess had covered with butcher paper for the kids to draw on.

We had lots of good food and conversation and felt really loved.

We got home around 9pm and Jojo fell asleep in the car. I went to sleep immediately after putting the kids to bed.

The rest of the weekend has just been spent waiting for Papa to get home on Sunday evening. Jojo and Deeds have a sudden and all-consuming fascination with TinTin Books and DVD’s.

These have to be the original “graphic novels”, written and drawn between 1929 and 1976 by a Belgian artist named Herge. I first was introduced to TinTin Books when I was teaching in Beijing in 2002. One of my students was a little boy from the Phillipines. He was kind of a pain but he would sit quietly and look at TinTin books.

I later saw them being sold at an ESL book fair and bought 10 or 11 of them! Our school also has some in the library. They are really popular and show the signs of being well loved and oft read.

I was able to pick up TinTin DVD’s on a visit to China in 2006. I would still like to buy some figures or dolls some day.

I like TinTin Books because the are entertaining and interesting while also giving insight into history and geography. TinTin is a young journalist who travels all over the world researching stories for his newspaper articles, and solving mysteries in the process.
