Fun Baths With Boon

I think one of the major lessons of motherhood is that every second of every day can be a “teachable moment”.

What was once a bowl of breakfast cereal now becomes a treatise on geometry; a simple walk to the mailbox is transformed into a horticulture seminar.

I suppose the folks at Boon agree, judging by their Bug Pod bath BoonB2 toy scoop, drain, and storage!

This is bath fun you only wish had been invented when you were a kid. An oh-so-cute ladybug stuffed to the brim with playthings sits unobtrusively in the shower until bath time. Dump out the Bath Goods, BoonB3 and a sort of Pop Art extravaganza ensues.

Forget mere splashing around in tepid water— this is an exercise in creativity and fun.

Foam shapes that have no name, whose colors are too unique to be labeled, encourage kids to do their own thing.

Although Buckley’s a little too young to go Warhol on us, she loved to touch, wave, chew on, and stick the Bath Goods to the wall. The foam pieces adhere easily once wet and are no trouble for tiny fingers to remove should they be inspired.

Before you know it, a bath is not only a whole lot more fun, it’s an art lesson, too.

bugPod_451 All this would be nice but a bit much if it weren’t for the practical design of the Bug Pod. This portable ladybug sticks, screws, or suctions onto your shower wall (we chose the sticky method after a few suction collapses) in just one step.

The “wings” of the insect serve as a carrier for the foam shapes, balls, and loofah, and it is removed simply for playtime access.

Then, when bath time is over, a few scoops are all it takes for a quick and easy clean-up.

The water drains out through the ladybug’s spots and allows your toys to air dry for next time.

No fishing around in dirty bath water, no sopping sleeves, and, best of all, even the most astute child doesn’t realize their toys are being taken away, because it’s just so darn fun.

Marti’s writings have appeared in Paste, Southword, Southern Living, and Lipstick Magazines.

She blogs about her culinary discoveries at blankpalate.blogspot.com

Boon wants to giveaway a Bug Pod to one Mom Most Traveled reader!

1.) To win this hip and functional bath toy storage ($35.98 value), leave a comment about what works and what doesn’t for your kids’ bath time. (You may enter once a day - subsequent entries don’t require you to answer the question).

Please don’t just comment with “Enter me” or “Sounds great”. That totally annoys me. Those entries are not eligible to win.

One winner will be chosen at random.

This giveaway is open to those with a US or Canadian mailing address.

This contest will close May 15, 2009, 11:59 CST.

Winner announced: Congrats to RANDI !

My kids love bath time! Just about anything works for them - bath toys, bath crayons, empty bottles and containers to fill and empty, etc. Recently, their fave thing has been to “bathe” their dolls while they are in the tub. My youngest still dislikes having water poured over her head, though ;-)

I can just comment on my nieces and nephew - the toys aren’t the fun part, the fun part is splashing. Even better if the grown-ups get wet!

This bug pod is the cutest! My 14 month-old is just starting to really enjoy bath time. What works for me is I make up a couple ice cube trays of ice colored brightly with food coloring drops in a big bag in my freezer. Come bath time, I take a few cubes out and let him play with the colorful, melting ice in the bath. Right now he just likes to hold it in his hand under the water and watch it melt, but he gets such a kick out of it and it leaves the water a pretty color (but not so much that it stains him!)

I always find bath time to be so much fun!! There’s lots of toys and splashing involved. Since the only part my kids don’t like is the rinsing of the hair, I count to 20 in Spanish or German (with each small bucket of water) to teach my kids to count in a foreign language and to distract them as I rinse their hair.

All my kids need during their bath are their cups…for dumping on each others head, waterfall, watering the bathroom floor….My daughter loves her barbies too especially the hair color changing one.

We’re still in a baby bathtub (our house only has a shower — long story) so compact toys are what works for us. We have stackable measuring cups that I hang on a hook for her to pour with, and I use them to help wash her hair…then we have a simple fishing game with a net that also goes on a hook. The bug pod looks a little deluxe for us but I’m dying to see what she’d do with it! Those weird shapes have to be fun…

I don’t know if there’s been anything that *didn’t* work with baths (despite the fact she doesn’t have a lot of toys, she doesn’t seem to get bored) — the main issue, of course, is getting out. Right now she seems to be okay with having to see if her toes are wrinkled and if they are, it’s time to get out. Don’t know how long that will last, though!

My daughter loves taking a bath, as long as there are lots of toys. Hair-washing is another matter - she has always hated it. Finally we got a bathtime face shield that slips on over her forehead and keeps her face and ears dry when we pour water over her hair. That has helped some. This toy holder is a really great idea. Thanks for the chance!

One thing that works for bathtime is an organic baby wash with a pump top. I love not having to juggle the bottle - and knowing that the product is safe for my kids.

What doesn’t work for me right now are those bath squirters. My kids love them but I go through them constantly because we can’t seem to get all of the water out and they get yucky. I’d love to find some tips for cleaning squirters safely!

what doesn’t: not allowing enough time for sufficient SPLASHING!

  106. 106 Michelle E
    09 May 2009, 4:43 am

Sarah @ Mom Balance brings up a good point — another reason there are probably so many of us trying to win these toys — so many toys are squirt toys, and while they are fun I can’t shake the feeling they are not good because of the mold. I like that these are foam.

My daughter received a couple of those little plastic squirting toys as a gift, and I was taken aback when they started squirting nasty stuff out. I tried hot water and soap, hot water and vinegar, exposure to sunlight, but I could still see the marks left by the mold when I held it up to the light. The thing that seemed to work most efficiently was bleach, but I really don’t want her to be squirting any leftover bleach residue in her bath water, either…so for the moment we’ve repurposed those squirtable toys for the sandbox. They’re fun to push around and hide…

My little guy loves to take a bath once he’s in there, it’s the getting him in there part that can be a challenge. So, I’ve put together an assortment of water toys he likes, and I show them to him and ask him if he’s ready to take a bath. So far, that’s working like a charm.

I believe the Ladybug Pod is a great way to get you child to learn to put his own toys away after playing with them. Then he know they will be there when he has his next bath!!

When I’m babysitting my niece and it’s bath time, she needs interaction - playing peek-a-boo using the shower curtain, coming up with stories about her bath toys. And she definitely needs reminders to actually get clean, not just use the tub for playtime.
