Eye Can Art

I’m eager to introduce my children to some fantastic hands-on art techniques. Many times, when it comes to children’s art kits, there is less “art” and more “craft”.

A stand out in a sea of cheesy art products for children is the award-winning Eye Can Art.

These kits are real artistic techniques in kid size.

One such offering from Eye Can Art is the Sumi-e kit.

Sumi-e is the Japanese art of brush painting.

In this well equipped kit, you get black liquid watercolor (your medium), a sponge, special, thin Sumi-e paper, a bamboo brush to perfect those strokes, a foam chop for carving your own distinctive name-stamp signature, a wood block, printing ink, black mounting paper for displaying the finished product, adhesive dots for affixing the work to the mounting paper, and instructions.

In sumi-e, the goal of the artist is to capture the essence, or the “soul” of what they are painting, rather than a carbon copy.
Accordingly, sumi-e paintings are usually simple, with strong lines.
This bare-bones style takes years to perfect, but it is also easy for children to catch on quickly.

Eye Can Art has other great kits for children I want to try them all!

There is a Printmaking Kit, a Wax Drawing Kit, and a Book In A Box Kit.

It would be great to stock up on a few of these for something fun and educational to do with your children during holiday break or rainy days/ snow days.

You can get any of these in a Group Kit so that up to 10 kids can join in the fun! What a fun idea for a class, birthday party, or summer camp!

The Art-tivity could also serve as a party favor, or a kids activity to keep offspring occupied so that the grown-ups can have a quiet dinner party.

Eye Can Art provides high quality materials and clear instruction, giving kids the tools they need to let their creativity shine!

Eye Can Art kits are ideal for ages 4 to 12 (or beyond!), and retail for $24. They can be found in specialty stores and museum shops around the country, or online.

The Printmaking and Sumi-e kits won Oppenheim Toy Portfolio Gold Seal awards, the Book in a Box Kit won Creative Child Magazine’s Toy of the Year Award!
PLUS, a Parents’ Choice Award for the Eye Can Art Collograph Printmaking Kit and a Parents’ Choice Award for the Eye Can Art Sumi-e Brush Painting Kit!

Definitely think of Eye Can Art when you need a gift for your cultured friend’s kids!

I love these kits! I’m tempted to get Chris the sumi one for Christmas. He’s learning kanji and I think this would be fun.

The Sumi-e Painting Kit was one of the most interesting art kits we reviewed this year. We’re always delighted when we find companies that are stretching the art experience for kids. Our full review is on our site, http://www.toyportfolio.com.

Oh, this looks interesting. My mother and I took Bunka lessons when I was about the same age my son is now. I think we might try this, thanks for the review.
