I am sensitive to light and sound when I am trying to sleep. Even as a child, I used my blankie to cover my eyes while sleeping. Now as an adult I sometimes use a sleep mask, and I LOVE my white noise machine. I think Deeds has inherited my light-sleeper gene (he has his own white noise machine), and I was a little worried about how over 36 hours of travel would affect his ability to sleep.
I was thrilled to discover the Downtime Sleepy hat…an adorable hat that doubles as a sleep mask for babies! If adults and older children use eye/sleep masks all the time - why should baby not be offered the same comfort of a darkened environment?
The Downtime Sleepy hat is made from 100% organic pima cotton, resulting in a very soft and very light-weight weave.
An adjustable top knot and a form-fitting elasticized mesh lining ensure that the Downtime Sleepy hat fits safely and snuggly. There is no risk of strangulation with the Downtime Sleepy hat because there are no straps.
I was a little nervous as to whether or not I could get baby Deeds to leave the Downtime Sleepy hat on his head. The first time we used it, I nursed him to sleep on the airplane while he wore the hat. After he was asleep, I flipped the mask down over his eyes:
Deeds proceeded to sleep for 4 1/2 hours on the airplane! Then he woke up, ate a jar of baby food, and went back to sleep for another 3 hours. This time I put that hat on him after he was already asleep. It didn’t bother him or wake him. The Downtime Sleepy hat is a must have for babies like Deeds: there is no way he could have slept for over seven hours in the brightly lit airplane cabin without his eyes veiled.
The Downtime Sleepy hat is great to use while traveling or ANY TIME you need your baby to sleep when you aren’t in a dark room. I even shoved it over Jojo’s head (his idea, I promise!) while we were walking through LAX in the wee hours of the morning. Jojo (age 3 1/2) was riding in the stroller and said he was tired and wanted to try the special sleep mask. Even after he was done resting, he wore the hat while we were busy at the check-in counter (the Downtime Sleepy hat is sized for babies up to 18 months).
I recommend the Downtime Sleepy hat to any anxious parent who needs to travel with a baby. It would be nice to have in your bag of tricks especially if you are changing time zones.
