Developmental Milestones

I got this email today (below) and I just LOVE learning about how my kids are developing.
I earned a Master’s degree in teaching and my favorite classes were the development classes.
In fact I just found some notes from one of my classes stuck in a book today. It is so neat looking at this stuff again now that my own children are growing and developing on this track.
For example, this chart says that by age 60 months (5 years), Jojo should know common opposites (light and heavy, big and little, etc.), be able to repeat sentences as long as nine words, should be able to follow three commands without interruptions (go in your room, get your jacket and put it on), should know his age, should have simple time concepts such as afternoon, night, tomorrow, yesterday, today.
The list is super long but it is so rewarding to be able to scan and see that Deedsy is right on track at 18 months with a vocabulary of 5-20 words.

Most of his words sound like grunts but they definitely have emotional meanings. He can indicate that he wants to nurse (he either says Mama! frantically or Nur!), that he wants a snack/food (mum mum mum mum! like a cookie-monster type eating sound),he says bye bye, and he LOVES talking about Jojo, his hero! He has a sound that means “Thank you” or “Khop Jai” in Lao. He has a few good animal sounds including cat, dog, cow, owl, pig, and a large lizard with a very distinct call. I don’t know the English name, but it is called “khapgay” in Lao or “toukay” in Khmer.

What skills are your little ones currently mastering?

hooray!!!!! i love your post. my son, also 5, is definitely not at the level that the ‘experts’ say. and i’m so fine with it, cause he’s totally normal. i wish that experts would stop reading so much and actual go outside and see what is happening!

I love reading about children’s milestones too. My kids are pretty much right on target as well. Except for my youngest he is way ahead of the game. He’s always been gifted.

I always loved watching their progress according to milestones too. I think it’s so neat that they’re learning some Lao. You have an amazing life. I have always had such a fascination with other cultures and have tried to expose my kids to lots of experiences. But, yours takes the cake.

My 18 month old is having difficulty with his speech. He rarely says any words and mostly grunts and points.
