Next Saturday, December 19th, me and the fam will be embarking on our most ambitious family adventure to date: a three week tour of Vietnam.
We will start in Hanoi, then head to Hoi An and Hue by way of Danang, then finishing in Ho Chi Minh City before flying home.
Hanoi is in the north, Danang is in central Vietnam, on the coast (the area known as “China Beach”), and Ho Chi Minh City, or The Area Formerly Known As Saigon, is in the south.
LastMinuteTravel.com provided us with vouchers which we used to book our in-Asia flights through their site. But the rest is all up to us.
Come to think of it, the reason I am moved to blog about it right now is that I am sitting down to try to figure out our accommodations. We don’t have any plans or reservations.
I picked Hanoi because it is exciting and modern, Danang because it has a beach and an airport, Hue because it has beautiful, historic architecture, and Hoi An because it is known for its cheap yet skillful tailors. Ho Chi Minh City wasn’t really on my list, because it is so far south I’m afraid I will melt, but hubs wanted to give it a go, so I’m game!
I don’t have a schedule; I survive these family endeavors by remaining flexible!
I have vague notions of watching water puppets shows with the kids and eating my favorite Fanny’s Ice Cream in Hanoi. Maybe taking a little excursion to Halong Bay, eating some Pho. You know. The basics.
I’m excited to see what develops, and I’m happy to take your suggestions!

Just don’t sniff the paper fans at the Hanoi Water Puppet Show. PeeeeYoooo!
In Hue, I stayed at the Hai Dang Hotel, and really liked it. Breakfast was provided, service was very friendly, and it was centrally-located. http://www.haidanghotel.com

The trick with Hanoi is to plan as little as possible. Normally people try to see everything and they get annoyed by the traffic and the noise.
But, if you just station yourself in some roadside coffee shop then you can watch the world go pass you.
The only thing you have to see in Hanoi are the incredible people and their daily lives.
The only other advice is keep smiling - everything works better if you smile here.

These are essential cities to visit in Vietnam. While in Hanoi, don’t miss Halong Bay (and Sapa too if you have time). I hope more people can come to Vietnam see the country for themselves.
