When I was younger (so much younger than today), I often ate cereal not only for breakfast, but sometimes for lunch, and even dinner. And then maybe one more bowl for a nightcap.
I tended to naturally choose the better-for-me cereals with things like fiber, but not all children are perfect like I was.
Thankfully, for the sake of our children, General Mills has announced a commitment to further reduce sugar in cereals advertised to kids under 12 to single digit grams of sugar per serving.
The company has already been reducing sugar in cereals while increasing key nutrients, such as calcium and vitamin D, and providing whole grain.
Eating breakfast is important, and cereal can be a great source of fiber, as well as delivering vitamins, minerals and other essential nutrients.
Dig these crazy facts:
* Ready-to-eat cereals, including presweetened cereals, account for only 5% of sugar in children’s diets.
* Ready-to-eat cereal is the No. 1 source of whole grains in a child’s diet today.
* More frequent cereal eaters tend to have healthier body weights and lower Body Mass Index measures.

My boys love Cheerios, especially the Honey Nut variety, so I will be relieved to know that even though Honey Nut Cheerios are sweetened, they are still healthy. Phew.
I love cereal so much that I have trouble staying loyal to one variety. I have been known to mix the goodness of things like Chex, Fiber One and Total all in one bowl.
My husband loves Lucky Charms. I mean really LOVES them. He will not accept an imitation. I haven’t allowed the boys to have Lucky Charms for breakfast, but they have it for a snack sometimes later in the day.
