So, as promised, the Pirate Costume Contest was judged by 3-year-olds.
Even though I work with 13 3-year-olds, I somehow expected their rationales to be a little more all-encompassing.
By popular vote, the winner of the kids division of the Pirate Costume Contest was this entry:
Because, “It like bird.” And I think they liked the colors. Of the feathers.

The winner in the adult pirate costume category just really confuses my ideas of what I thought kids would be drawn to…
The judging process went like this, “I am going to show you some pictures of pirates. Do you know what a pirate is?”
“Okay you tell me which picture you like the best. There are 4 grown up pirates.”
(this one, this one, this one…then the same ones again in reverse order).
“Why do you like this one?”
Because, “He strong”
“He a strong one”
And I think they like the hat, because the SAME HAT on the child entry was a VERY CLOSE SECOND.
