At the Corner of 7th and H; New DC Walgreens! #WAGDC

CanCan at #WAGDC

I love going to Washington DC from NYC, it is so convenient and easy, but a whole different world once you get there. On March 21 I had a fun reason to travel to DC; it was the grand opening of a brand new Walgreens Flagship store at the corner of 7th and H in DC Chinatown.

This was a special occasion, a veritable red carpet with famous and influential DC residents. The store itself took center stage, with three levels of majesty.

The pharmacy and Take Care Clinic are at the basement level of this Walgreens Flagship store. The Take Care Clinic is a walk in clinic right inside the Walgreens. It has a set price list and accepts all kinds of patients, no matter their insurance.

In this pharmacy is an iPad equipped with a health guide to help customers navigate the wide range of health and wellness products and services.

Exciting to me is that the Take Care Clinic is open from 8am to 6pm on week days, and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on weekends.

Isn’t it interesting how often times people don’t get sick during regular office hours? Thanks for being smart about this, Walgreens!

On the street level is all of the food and goodies! Tawanna and I enjoyed the fresh UpMarket sushi! Yum Yum!

Have you heard of the Coca-Cola Freestyle machine?

You press these digital buttons to be your own Coke product mixologist and create the beverage of your choosing! I am partial to my vanilla-cherry-root beer cocktail!

Think you can do better? There are over 130 possible combinations!

There are hundreds of fresh food items, an Upmarket Cafe with a barista, and a juice and smoothie bar. Also see: some pretty fresh and tasty cupcakes.

UpMarket Salads at Walgreens

Upstairs from the ground floor is an entire floor dedicated to the LOOK Boutique! It has a nail bar, and dozens of high end cosmetic, skin care, and hair care brands not typically found in drug stores.

Available at LOOK Boutique is Britain’s leading skin care brand, No7 by Boots.

No7 By Boots Beauty Products

No7 has all kinds of good stuff like anti-aging serums. I am pro-anti-aging! Does that make sense?

In all of the happiness, yummy food, and general excitement, I still took the time to do some celebratory Awkward Stretching with my pals:

Aqueduck Helps Shorties Reach Faucets

Aque04

This is one of those Simple Ideas that is very useful!

My 3-year-old is really too heavy for me to lift him up to wash hands at an adult-sized faucet. It is a serious issue in places like airports; I don’t want to get a hernia, c’mon!

The Aqueduck Bathroom Faucet Extender by Peachy, LLC makes hand washing easier for kids by bringing the water closer via a simple flow-extender.

The Aqueduck Bathroom Faucet Extender – Aquaslips on to the faucet a with no tools, so you can use it for travel, take it to grandma’s house or whatever.

Great thinking, Peachy, LLC!

The Aqueduck Bathroom Faucet Extender comes in yellow/blue or yellow/pink.

My youngest son, 3-year-old Deeds, was in my school class this year. Deeds had to share me with 16 other demanding 3-year-olds. Deeds was not always a model student. It was a stretching time for both of us.

Now that summer is here, I’m looking forward to being just plain “Mama” to Deeds, not “Ms. Candice”.

This picture is from our date to the botanical gardens this week. After dropping Jojo off at Garden Camp, we spent a leisurely hour wandering the forest, enjoying the scenery in the Japanese garden, watching koi swim in the giant pond, and turtles lazily sunning themselves on rocks.

Deeds ate a box of raisins, told me where to sit, decided what we would look at, and how long we would look at it.

It was relaxing and nice; I loved the feeling of being able to enjoy time with my son and not having to worry about keeping a thousand plates spinning at once.

During dinner, Deeds told everyone how we walked on the brown bridge and a red bridge, we saw turtles in the sun, and that Mama went the wrong way and we had to go back (I took us down a path that led to a locked gate that said an alarm would sound if we touched it.)

I think the day made an impression on him, and it was like a vacation from nagging for me. I got lots of cute pictures of him, too!

We saw a $200 Fairy house:

Enjoyed seeing a big bronze “bum bum”:

IMG 1864

I hope that Deeds and I can have more dates this summer. I don’t want his formative memories of me to be a stressed out, barking mom.

I want to be the mom who stops to take pictures of bronze bum bums, hangs out on the garden swing, and doesn’t rush him to finish his raisin box because the mosquitos are out.

I’m thinking of taking him on a train trip to New Orleans. Am I crazy?

Maybe I am, actually.

Here’s hoping I stay on the “cool” side of “Crazy Mom”.

Neutrogena Wet Skin Sunblock

NeutrogenaPhotoYou know how you are supposed to reapply sunscreen every two hours when you are out swimming?

The Skin Cancer Foundation states “reapplication of sunscreen is just as important as putting it on in the first place” and advises to “reapply the same amount every two hours.”

I have very infrequently abided by this recommendation. One of my main reasons is that sunscreen and wet skin don’t mix.

Until now.

Oh yes. I have NEWS for you.

Neutrogena has DONE it.

Yes, Neutrogena, the #1 dermatologist recommended suncare brand, has created new Neutrogena Wet Skin Sunblock Sprays for adults and kids, specifically designed for wet skin.

They are SPRAYS and they are available in SPF 30, SPF 50, SPF 85, and a special kids version that is SPF 70.

The whole family can be protected from damaging UVA/UVB rays.

I love the entire concept. I was a slow adapter of spray sunscreen, but for Wet Skin Sunblock, I like it.

I also love that this is a Neutrogena product, because Neutrogena is one of the only sunscreen brands I can use on my face without having a breakout or swollen lips.

I am developing some zany skin sensitivities in my old age, I tells you.

Buy online you will save $2 on all sunscreen products! Click here to check out all their sunscreen products and to take advantage of the savings.

“I wrote this review while participating in a blog tour campaign by Mom Central Consulting on behalf of Neutrogena and received sunscreen and other Neutrogena products as a thank you for my participation.”

Zippies Collectable ID Tags

RotatingImage 02Image001

Kids are always collecting and trading something, it seems.

The newest fad that I have heard of is Zippies, “the pals that hang around.”

Zippies are round, flexible, characters that have a practical purpose as well you can clip them on to water bottles, lunch boxes, luggage, backpacks, jackets, and other things and they serve as a name label or place for contact information.

Zippies ID tags have one of many different characters on one side with a place for contact information on the other.

This way, emergency contact information (last name and parent’s phone number) is with the child at all times.

Zippies are a fun collectable and a fun way to help children learn to be responsible for personal belongings.

I am a teacher and I label everything! I even labeled my own personal stuff like my iPod, computer, my keys…pretty much everything I own has my name on it.

So while Zippies are for kids, I can find grown-up uses for them too! My favorite design is the frog!

Photo

Zippies

Currently there are 10 different characters.

Zippies sell for $4.98 each or $39.99 for the entire limited-edition first series of 10. That would be enough to split amongst your family members. Just don’t fight over them.

Lao Experiences Cooking School, Vientiane, Laos

Laos is a fantastic place to visit. Places like Bangkok or Chiang Mai, Thailand, Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam have their charms but are undeniably saturated with western influence.

Even after 9 years in Laos, I can still say that it is relatively “off the map”. In Luang Prabang, in Pakse, and yes, even in Vientiane, you can still experience true Laos.

Lao people are the true treasure of Laos, but when I am hosting guests, I still want to show them sights and get out and do stuff.

In Vientiane, sightseeing takes only about 3 days and you are pretty much finished.

So I was THRILLED to see that a new Lao Cooking School had opened offering one day classes (in English) to tourists.

The Lao Experiences cooking class is $35 a person, and it includes transportation to and from the school, originating in the downtown area, and of course you get to eat the food you make, and take home a little mini recipe book.

We made steamed fish wrapped in banana leaves, Lao tomato salsa, Lao egglant dip, sticky rice, grilled veggie kabobs, and mango with sticky rice dessert. We saw demonstrations on making Lao green papaya salad, grilled chicken, and grilled fish.

For more fabulous photos, go look at my friend Sharon’s blog about her Lao Experiences cooking experience.

Jojo and I had a really good time together at Lao Experiences. It was fun to do something that we were both interested in, and I really am confident that I can make this stuff at home now!

The food was good and the instructors were sweet and patient. Class size is really small so you feel free to ask for help and as a bonus, you get to conversate with the Lao instructors.

Visit www.Lao-Experiences.com for more info about taking the class.

Wat Phousi Temple, Luang Prabang Laos With Kids

I first went to Luang Prabang, Laos in 2004. I think I went twice, once in December 2004 and again in April 2005. Both times, Jojo was a teeny tiny baby.

Last weekend I went back, now as a mother of two rowdy boys, and I think I can chalk it up as one of the easiest and most family-friendly trips we have done.

Here was our experience today at Wat Phousi, a temple on a mountain top. It is something like 300 steps to climb to the top.

The boys had a really fun time climbing and exploring, even though they whined at first, they also whined when it was time to leave. They really loved climbing all over that gun.

We were sweaty, but it was worth it.

Piggyback Rider Goes Beyond Strollers

PiggyBack4

My kids love to ride “up top”, which means sitting on a grown-up’s neck or shoulders.

Sure its fun for them, but its not very sustainable for the poor adult. The sore neck and back consume your every thought after a few moments!

Next time we go to the zoo, gardens, National Park, festival, parade, or theme park, I am excited to use The Piggyback Rider™.

The Piggyback Rider was invented by dads and allows children stand on a shoulder-mounted foot bar, strapped into a harness for safety.

Kids get a bird’s eye view and parents get an easy, convenient way to carry their child aged 2 1/2 – 7 (up to 60 pounds).

As a baby-wearing mama, I really like that the child and parent can conversate and listen to each other while walking in Piggyback Rider Child Carrier, unlike in a stroller where the child is in their little pod, removed from the group.

Deeds was really thrilled to try Piggyback Rider Child Carrier with Papa. While Deeds is a reliable walker, he does get easily distracted, so I think that this is just the solution for a crowded “keep moving forward” outing.

It is recommended to use The Piggyback Rider with shoes, since the foot bar as no-slip foot grips (kind of scratchy for bare footsies) but Deeds lives barefoot so he tried it au naturale.

Atlanta For Families: Kimpton Palomar Midtown

2593782 38 b

I recently visited the ATL and stayed at the Palomar Atlanta (866 West Peachtree Street, NWAtlantaGA 30308) Midtown; actually only a couple blocks from the MARTA “Midtown” station.

It is near to the Margaret Mitchell House and Museum, the HIGH Museum, the Fox Theatre, and Georgia Institute of Technology. I could see a Publix nearby out of my window as well, which is always handy if you are traveling with kids and need emergency diapers, snacks, or cold medicine. Or sedatives?

The Palomar is only two years old, and is even eco-friendly (including eco-certified cleaning supplies).

My spacious room had nice city views, a shower big enough for four people (par-tae!), a comfy king-sized bed, good pillows, a giant flat-screen, and a cute little sofa.

It was super clean, the carpets were impeccable and not old or pet-smelly, and they had a minibar stocked with organic and fair trade snacks and drinks (I did not taste of that nectar, you know how mini bar prices are).

I was able to access free Wi-Fi by joining “Kimpton InTouch”, a free email newsletter. They had me at “free Wi-Fi”.

The Palomar has free coffee and tea in the mornings until 10 am, and on my walk to the MARTA station I saw some non-chain breakfast options. In the evenings, the Palomar has a complimentary wine reception for guests.

And? Pets are welcome at this hotel, in the guest rooms as well as at the wine reception (juice in a cocktail glass for the kids!). Good times.

Note, if you are a animal-phobe, it is actually pretty easy to avoid them. But if you want to interact with other people’s pets (or bring yours) there is always that option.

The Palomar Atlanta has several ammenties for families. Young children are given a goody bag at check-in. Mine had a drawstring backpack, a yo-yo, activity book, playing cards, and play doh.

PhotoFor older children, the Palomar provides a complimentary movie from their movie selections, and popcorn. I also got a list of recommendations of family-friendly attractions in the area.

In the room, there was an adorable kid-sized bathrobe to use during the stay. It looked cute next to the adult sized zebra patterned and leopard patterned robes.

Family RobesF2215432

The staff at the Palomar are very accomodating to families and special considerations.

I was regaled with positive examples like the time they arranged childcare for all of the out-of-town wedding rehearsal participants staying there.

Last summer, the Palomar instituted an impromptu Kids Club, with activities and a popcorn machine in one of the rooms adjacent to the lobby. A Kids Club is a huge plus for me! Every time we have been at an establishment with a Kids Club, Jojo has begged to go as often as possible. Even in Bali. When we wanted to take him to the beach. In a tropical paradise. C’mon, kid!

I was given a fruit plate, but other than that, I brought my own food to the Palomar because of dietary restrictions. They were very helpful when I asked to use a microwave. They sent someone up to my room to get my gluten-free spaghetti, microwaved it, and brought it back on a nice plate with a cover on it. It was like tightwad’s room service! I was pleased.

For location, amenities, and friendly staff, I give the Palomar two thumbs up! The only thing that dampened my positivity was the $30 a day for required valet parking (no self-parking is available. Boo dat.).

Thanks for a good time, Palomar Atlanta!

Why the Bulkhead Row Is Not Best for Families

tripSolo

I fly internationally several times a year. My first international flight as a parent was with a seven week old infant. I don’t know how the idea was originally planted in my mind, but like many parents I became fixated on scoring the bulkhead row for my baby.

Though I was originally told by the airline that it wasn’t possible to reserve the bulkhead row…blabbitty blah blah…I guess I wore them down by persistent and polite harassment.

I used the bulkhead row for that flight, and then again when baby was about four months old.

After that I became disillusioned with the bulkhead.

On my recent flight from Bangkok to NYC, I noticed that the bulkhead rows were crammed with families of toddlers. And they were miserable.

Here is the skinny on the bulkhead row.

  • Yes, there is a bassinet that can affix to the wall. BUT, did you know the bassinet has a maximum recommended capacity of about 15 pounds, and that it is only about as long as your average Build-a-Bear? It was perfect for my 7-week-old, but by 5 months he was too big. The bassinet is NOT a secure place for your infant during turbulence. It is kind of like laying your baby on a tray table with a five inch rim. I saw two families of toddlers attempting to use bassinets on this flight. Bad idea. That was seriously the “cryingest” flight I have ever been on in over a decade.
  • There is no where to store your things. You can’t put the diaper bag under the seat in front of you for easy access. Everything has to go in the overhead bin. This is a major inconvenience when your child needs to be constantly plied with snacks and other distractions.
  • There is no way to corral your mobile toddler. The animal-instinct toddler has a clear path to dart out from one wall of the plane to the other, and is steps away from the galley or toilet. When my children were walking but had not yet reached the age of reason (you know, when you can’t really tell them not to do stuff and expect them to understand you), it was far easier to keep them penned in if I could position my body between them and the aisles of the aircraft.
  • In the bulkhead row of an International flight, you are typically inches away from a giant movie screen that is not in your control. So even if everybody else on the plane has their own personal movie screens that they can control and turn on and off, you are at the mercy of the flickering glare.
  • You think you would have more legroom…but you might actually get LESS legroom in the bulkhead row. Depending on the type of plane you are on, the wall might be a mere 12 inches away from your seat.
  • The tray tables (and possibly TV screens) on the bulkhead row are built into the armrest. This actually shaves valuable width off of your bulkhead seat, and gives you zero mobility once the tray table is unfolded. Smooshing into your post-baby pooch. I’m just sayin’.

So before you go on a crusade to land the bulkhead you might want to reconsider if your child is mobile or bigger than a Build-A-Bear.

Knowledge is power.
