I first went to Luang Prabang, Laos in 2004. I think I went twice, once in December 2004 and again in April 2005. Both times, Jojo was a teeny tiny baby.
Last weekend I went back, now as a mother of two rowdy boys, and I think I can chalk it up as one of the [...]

Piggyback Rider Goes Beyond Strollers

My kids love to ride “up top”, which means sitting on a grown-up’s neck or shoulders.
Sure its fun for them, but its not very sustainable for the poor adult. The sore neck and back consume your every thought after a few moments!
Next time we go to the zoo, gardens, National Park, festival, parade, or theme [...]

Where have you gone my little boy?
Turn around you’re two. Turn around then you’re four Turn around you’re a young man going out the door

How did it happen so fast, Deeds? Your first birthday, your second birthday, and now…August 15th, 2010…you are THREE!
How can I describe you [...]

This has been one of those weeks that Busyness hid around the corner, jumped out, and put me in a headlock for three days.
The first day of school for the boys was also my first day of teaching for the school year…in fact, Deeds is in my class!
Jojo loves being a Kindergartener and is trying [...]

The Playmobil zoo from Playmobil’s 1.2.3. line arrived at our house today.
1.2.3 is designed for younger children, ages 18 months and older, and also appropriate and safe for special needs children.
The pieces feature bright colors and rounded edges.
I took a picture of an original sized Playmobil figure (the pilot, on the left) next to [...]

My boys had long and lovely locks.

Jojo asked for a haircut to get his bangs out of his eyes and Deeds was starting to have trouble eating and stuff because when he leaned his head forward, hair would fall in his face.
So. I gave in.

Both of them put on a brave face but [...]

Deeds’s First Program

Deeds will be 3 in August (I know!) and he currently goes to a Montessori preschool 3 mornings a week.
On Friday evening he had his first ever “program” where he performed songs from their recent “music” unit of study.
Most of the time he stood there with the “deer in the headlights” look, but [...]

I have been an expat for 8 years now, all of them in Asia.
When I first moved abroad, I felt homesick most keenly during the holidays.
However, now I actually am thankful to not be faced by the stresses that holidays bring in the country of my birth.
For Easter, I didn’t give a thought to [...]

Have you heard of the traditional practice of putting an amber necklace on an infant or toddler to relieve teething pain?
Amber is fossilized tree sap. When worn against the skin, Baltic amber beads release natural oils with analgesic and anti-inflammatory properties.
I have been wearing amber for several months now to help with wrist and [...]

This past week, my husband was away in Kenya for a physics conference.
It was a special week because Deeds started school! He will go three mornings a week to a Montessori school, and eat lunch at school too. The other two days he is involved in a well organized playgroup.

The first morning of [...]
