Tropical Traditions Gluten Free Organic Coconut Flour #Giveaway

In January I went gluten free. And dairy free. Oh and I’m already a vegetarian for the past 16 years.

I haven’t tackled gluten free baking. I have tried pancakes with rice flour, and that was a fail.

Tropical Traditions is one of my favorite companies; I use their Virgin Coconut Oil EVERYDAY as both a food product and a body product. I use it for moisturizer and even put it in my hair.

Tropical Tradions has an array of gluten free products!

Organic coconut flour nutritional panel

While some of these don’t meet my needs as a vegetarian (lamb…is made of lamb meat), I am really excited about the Organic Coconut Flour!

It tastes yummy and healthy, smells delicious, and is safe for a gluten free diet or a paleo diet.

The texture is way better than rice flour. I love that Organic Coconut Flour has so much protein, with 19.3 grams per serving! Awesome! I noticed that some people put it in their smoothies to get those extra nutrients. I haven’t done that, but I might try it for my kids.

On the Tropical Traditions website, they have all kinds of recipes that use Organic Coconut Flour, including (brace yourselves, my gluten free bretheren!) PIZZA CRUST!

Organic coconut flour sm

Here is a recipe that one of my “Paleo” diet friends sent me. Paleo is a good term to search if you are avoiding dairy and gluten.

Paleo Diet Coconut Cake Recipe

Ingredients

2 eggs

1/3 cup olive oil

1?2 cup honey

1cup coconut milk

1tsp 100% vanilla essence

1 cup almond meal

1?2 cup Organic Coconut Flour

1tsp baking powder (not paleo)

1?4 cup desiccated coconut

Instructions Pre-heat oven to 350 F/180 C.

Cream eggs, oil and honey in a large bowl until light and fluffy.

Add coconut milk and vanilla essence.

Add almond meal, Organic Coconut Flour, baking powder and desiccated coconut, combine well.

Line a loaf tin with baking paper and pour in coconut mixture.

Place in oven for 50-60min or until cooked.

Test by inserting a knife into the middle of the loaf, if it comes out clean it is cooked through.

NOTE: If you would prefer not to use baking powder, separate 2 eggs and beat the egg whites until stiff peaks form, then fold into the coconut mixture. This will help in aerating the bread.

First time Tropical Traditions customers can use THIS Mom Most Traveled referral link to receive a free copy of the book Virgin Coconut Oil: How it has changed people’s lives and how it can change yours!

Gorton’s Dream Trip Giveaway

Gorton's Seafood Promotion Giveaway

I didn’t grow up eating fish, but Jojo and Deeds like fish and shrimp. It makes me feel proud when they eat something that looks scary to me, like a grilled prawn.

When I buy them fish sticks, I want it to be made of real, whole, healthy cuts of fish. Not a potpurri of digustingness.

Gorton’s brand has all kinds of frozen seafood dishes that make life easy, such as grilled salmon, tilapia, shrimp, and all kinds of breaded seafood items also.

Until April 12, you can visit the Gorton’s Facebook fan page. http://www.gortons.com/seafoodlovers/ for a chance to win all kinds of awesome prizes, AND they are giving away a DREAM TRIP worth $5,000. I think my Dream Trip would be to the Greek Isles or Italy. Or maybe the Caribbean? All of them are Dream Trip options!

You have to enter by April 12, don’t forget! That is next Tuesday!

It isn’t as exciting as a trip, but I have a little giveaway from Gorton’s as well.

1.) Comment on this blog post with your favorite Gorton’s recipe (view recipes at http://www.gortons.com/recipes.htm) for your chance to win 2 free product coupons.

There will be FIVE winners. US only, sorry Canadians, Gorton’s is not sold in your neck of the woods!

2.) Email subscribers get an extra entry for as long as their subscription is active.

Already a subscriber? Leave me a separate comment on this post to let me know you’re interested in this giveaway.

Not yet a subscriber? Subscribe to Mom Most Traveled by Email (Only verified subscriptions are entered for all the giveaways.)

Winter Helps for Baby Eczema

Snapshot_20101113_3My 3-year-old has eczema on his hands and feet. It seemed to be especially irritated in the dry winter weather.

He has very sensitive skin, but his hands and feet are often red and rough. I also had noticed a couple of “cradle cap” spots on his scalp.

I started using a cocktail of products to treat him.

20% of American children suffer from eczema or dermatitis, and many more have sensitive skin that reacts to unnecessary chemicals or allergens found in common skin care brands. Snapshot_20101113_2

For Deeds, I started using Exederm Non-irritating Baby Shampoo and Exederm Flare Control Cream from the Exederm children’s line, which is highly rated by The National Eczema Association.

Exederm Children’s line of products contain:

No Fragrance

No Color or dyes

No Parabens

No Lanolin

No Sodium Laureth Sulfate

No Phthalates

No Nut Oils

Exederm has a full line of products to help you avoid eczema triggers.

Snapshot_20101113_5

I also started using Gentle Naturals Eczema Baby Wash on Deeds, which is supposed to be added by the capful to baby’s bath. For Deeds, we use it like a shower gel.

Gentle Naturals Eczema Baby Wash contains water, aloe, Jojoba Seed Oil, Calendula and Chamomilla extract, and other gentle ingredients.

Since using the Gentle Naturals Eczema Baby Wash along with the Exederm Non-Irritating Baby Shampoo, I have seen a gradual but marked improvement in Deeds’ hands, feet, and scalp.

First the redness went away, but the skin was still rough. Gradually, I have noticed the skin softening up and starting to feel more like normal preschooler skin instead of old elephant skin.

Gentle Naturals also has a Baby Eczema Cream for use as often as needed, and a Cradle Cap Care to help remove crusty scales.

When my kids had cradle cap, I had no idea what to do for it. I tried putting normal olive oil on it to loosen the gunk, it didn’t work and they ended up losing wads of hair along with the scales coming off (ew).

Cradle Cap Care contains calendula, jojoba oil, and vitamins. This is lighter and less greasy than using actual straight cooking oil. You apply it to the head and brush it a bit to loosen the scales, then shampoo as usual.

Visit the Gentle Naturals site to download a free coupon for Gentle Naturals!

coppertone pure and simple It might be winter, but protection from UV rays is still important. Dr. Elizabeth K. Hale, Clinical Associate Professor of Dermatology at NYU and practicing Dermatological surgeon, advises parents to apply sunscreen on themselves and their children just as they would during the summer, whether you are watching a football game or picking apples.

For sensitive littlies, the Coppertone Water Babies line has Coppertone Waterbabies Pure & Simple, which is tear free and gentle.

I had the misfortune of applying generic sunscreen to my own face and 3-year-old Jojo’s face (a few years ago)…that was the pits! As soon as our faces got wet, MY EYES! MY EYES!!! Agony!

Coppertone Kids Coppertone Kids Pure & Simple is a good option for kids and families.

Coppertone Kids Pure & Simple is tear free, gentle, oil, fragrance, and dye free, plus it contains aloe to help prevent dryness.

Be kind to your babies skin this winter!

I was born thrifty. When hubs and I first met in 1999, one of our first dates was watching my younger brother play guitar in his high school talent show. I don’t remember if I paid to get in. I hope not.

Now a days our Home Date Nights involve dinner with the kids, putting the kids to bed, then coming back downstairs for a little pre-recorded Mad Men, How I Met Your Mother, Community, or Rubicon (zzzz…I usually wander off at this point…also hubs has to watch Glee without me now).

Follow Macaroni Grill on Twitter and “Like” the Facebook page to be in the super awesome Macaroni Grill loop.

Breyers Smooth and Dreamy

Bryers Every member of my family loves ice cream, and hot summer weather is a great excuse to indulge.

New Breyers Smooth & Dreamy ice cream bars and sandwiches are a nice treat.

They come in six flavors, including Chocolate Caramel Brownie, Vanilla Caramel Chip, Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough, Chocolate Covered Strawberry, Vanilla Fudge Brownie, and Triple Chocolate Chip.

Breyers Smooth & Dreamy bars and sandwiches are actually a sensible indulgence, with no artificial flavors or colors, 120-160 calories and 4-6g of fat per serving.

Snapshot_20100727_7 I was hoping to check these out at the beach, but the Publix supermarket in the area didn’t have them. Booo!

Back in my hometown, I picked up some Vanilla Fudge Brownie ice cream sandwiches. These have 4 grams of fat per sammie, and 160 calories.

I enjoyed them with my two sons, and marveled that it tasted like regular ice cream. I mean, what is missing from these that make them relatively low in fat? I’m amazed.

The cookies were oval-shaped, unlike the picture on the box of round cookies. That is why my ice cream sandwich looks huge and lop-sided in the picture.

Get a printable coupon for $1.00 Off Breyers Smooth & Dreamy Ice Cream Bars and Sandwiches.

Enter to win 3 coupons for free boxes of Breyer’s Smooth & Dreamy Ice Cream Bars and Sandwiches!

My Parent Rewards Card

I have always been a coupon clipping, money saving type of gal.
I was excited to hear about a new national discount card called My Parent Rewards (www.MyParentRewards.com).

My Parent Rewards
just launched this year, and currently MPR Cardholders can use the My Parent Rewards card at over 100,000 businesses across the US and Canada.

You can “preview your savings” at MyParentRewards.com by typing in your zipcode and checking the deals in your area.

My zip code has deals at nationwide chains like Arby’s ($1 off a combo meal), Ann Taylor Loft (20% off your full price purchase), and some local spots like “Mr. P’s Deli”.

When you find a discount that you would like to print, click on the merchant name to display the discount details, then ‘Print Coupon’ an you are on your way.

There are also coupons for online deals (you don’t have to print those), and grocery coupons for things like 75 cents off a box of Kix.

The MPR card is normally $20, but is currently on sale for “free”, with $3.00 shipping and handling charges.

If you like using coupons, My Parent Rewards is definitely worth checking out!

Thank you, My Parent Rewards, for providing me with my own MPR discount card.
