Baby B’Air For Your Boo Bear

CanCan, 26 August 2008,
Categories: air travel, giveaways, reviews, safety, traveling baby

Children under the age of two are not required to purchase a seat on airplane trips. On US domestic flights, these “lap babies” can fly at no cost, provided they share a seat with their accompanying adult. On international flights, lap babies pay just a small percentage (typically around 10%) of the adult ticket price.

Now that Jojo is a preschooler and requires his own seat, he flies wearing the CARES safety harness. Even though Deeds travels in my lap, I still want him to be as safe as possible.

What if we fly through severe turbulence? Baby Deeds needs to be secure!

I was so relieved (and excited) to find the Baby B’Air Flight Safety Vest, a safety harness designed for “lap babies” to wear while flying.

The Baby B’Air Flight Safety Vest slips over the baby’s head and fastens around the body via two side straps and a third strap that goes between baby’s legs.

After take off, the parent can secure the Baby B’Air Flight Safety Vest onto the airplane lap belt by threading it through the loop on the back of the vest.

Deeds wore the vest on 2 domestic flights and intermittently throughout our 17-hour international flight. I was pleased with how much freedom of movement the Baby B’Air Flight Safety Vest allows. There is enough slack to allow the baby to be held in a cradle position; I had no trouble nursing Deeds while he was wearing the vest. Some parents also report that their baby could actually stand up in their laps while wearing the Baby B’Air, but Deeds never tried to stand while he was wearing the vest.

The Baby B’Air Flight Safety Vest has a warning on it that because of the red fabric, it should be washed and air dried prior to use to prevent fading/bleeding color onto other clothes. We did not have any trouble with the color bleeding.

Benefits of using a Baby B’Air:

The Baby B’Air Flight Safety Vest retails for $34.99, but personally I can not put a price on my peace of mind while traveling with my children!

The Baby B’Air company is generously sponsoring a giveaway for Mom Most Traveled readers.

Two winners will receive a Baby B’Air Flight Safety Vest in the “infant” size (16″ neck opening; fits babies up to age 6 months and 40 lbs).

Two winners will receive a Baby B’Air Flight Safety Vest in the “toddler” size (19″ neck opening; fits babies and toddlers from age 6 months to 2 years and up to 40 lbs)

To enter for your chance to win a Baby B’Air Flight Safety Vest, comment here with your thoughts on the video, and which size vest you would like to win.

FOUR winners will be chosen by random number generator.

This contest will close on September 8, 12 midnight.

*Congrats to Cathyhall and Heather, who both won the Infant Baby B’Air, and Sarah Schmiechen and Heather Brant, who each won a Toddler sized Baby B’Air! They have been notified by email!*

I like that there is still enough slack to be able to feed, comfort the baby without having to unstrap the baby.

The infant size would have to be the one we go with. Unfortunately our toddler is not a lap child anymore :(

I’d go with either size.. cause we will be traveling by air this year, it will be my first time! But I’d prefer both of my children to be safe and I always wondered if their was anything on the market and now it seems you have found it!

I’d go with the infant size though!

Ah, I know it wasn’t a real baby, but I felt quite ill when it went flying during the turbulence - they now how to drive a point home!
    I’d like the toddler size.

Wow- the video was awful- thank goodness it wasn’t a “real” baby! We would prefer the toddler vest, since our only travel during Dragonflies first six months is paid for by my husband’s employer, which means they buy a seat for both the kids. Freedom- yeah!

I like either size, my sister has a toddler and a baby arriving soon, she is always traveling on business and on family vacations to europe, which I know kids never stay still, they always want to run around.

It’s a great idea. The airlines should furnish them because they are responsible for the safety of all passengers, but it’s good that you can buy them and I think they are good for riding the subway or bus.

I have the infant one and used it with both of my children. They have both been on many flights and it gave me peace of mind that they would be safe during turbelance.

NOTE: Can’t be used for take off and landing but works for all the rest of the time. And yes, it does give your child lots of room to move around and nursing works great with it.

    Size: Toddler

It was good to have a reminder in the video that turbulence can happen at any time - even in blue skies - and that you need to be prepared. I’d go for the large or toddler size. Thanks for the chance! afdr3d@umkc.edu

I was unaware that a child under 2 did not require a seat and that you can place them on your lap and just how dangerous that can be during turbulance.

Thank you much for putting this product out there! I had no idea!! I’ve only flown once, and the turbulance was horrible…we are planning on going to Disneyland next summer and this is a must have for our family. I like the fact that the baby is still secure, yet you can cuddle with them. Again, thank you so much for the information about Baby B’Air!

Seeing the baby hit the ceiling almost made me sick. The real-life mother and baby both looked comfortable and it does seem like there’s enough give for holding/playing/feeding baby. Great idea/product. I’d love either size, as we travel a lot. But I’d choose infant to start being safe right away! Thanks!!

I really want one of these. When I was a teenager I flew to Florida and we hit a pocket of air and I just remember we were going down. I freaked. I do not need a toddler one any more because my son has his own seat now. So his Britax is coming on the plane. My daughter on the other hand is so small. I would love for her to be more safe when we fly. When I flew with my son a year ago they made me take the seat belt off of him and I remember thinking so what am I suppose to do? I would need a infant size for my daughter. I also loved the video I saw it when I was directed to this site a couple of months ago.

Last time we flew with our son they told us we couldn’t bring our carseat on even though we had purchased a seat since “it blocks the aisles” I was terrified (and fumming) the entire flight and would not fly again with a baby without some sort of restraint system. The video just proved my point. I would love to win the toddler vest. Thanks for a great giveaway!

But it does make u really think about safety- why take a chance when you can do something to help prevent injury! I would really like the toddler size if I won, and what a great product, thank you, I had no idea such a thing existed.

that video seemed to be an overreaction…but since i have a 16-month old, of course i would want to have one of these too…
i traveled with her when she was 6 months and the airline had a seatbelt for her that hooked to my seatbelt. it was pretty ok though not as flexible to use compared to the baby b’air vest. we will be traveling again when she is about 20 months. on domestic and international flights. would be nice to have one to use, the toddler size would be good. thanks.

and by the way, that lady in the video should have held on to the baby with both hands when the pilot announced possible turbulence. but, she was just holding on to the baby with one hand and reading/holding a book with the other hand…and even when there was actual turbulence!

This makes me think of the movie fearless where a woman had a baby in her lap when the plane crashed. Due to the impact there was no possible way she could hold onto the child and therefore the baby flew forward. The woman survived but the baby sadly did not. Obviously this is simply a movie but the fact that the situation is very very realistic has always stayed withe me. The baby flight vest is a very good idea. The promo movie was a little strange with the animation parts though. It made me think I was on a plane watching the stewardess point out the exits and stuff. Somewhat boring. But the product is definitly not.
I’d go for a toddler size if I win. Thanks

I like the idea…definitely less cumbersome than a car seat. I have a question…hopefully you’ll get this…does the person wearing the baby b’air have to hold on to the baby during turbulence or not hold onto the baby? I’ve heard that you’re not supposed to hold because the natural instinct we all have is to squeeze. What are your thoughts on this? Anyway…I would love to travel without lugging the car seat on the plane and paying for a seat which we did a few months ago. I’d choose the toddler size since my son is almost 15 months old
