I don’t need to remind you that the economy is bad (groan, eyeroll, etc. etc.). I’m started getting kind of bored sitting around in sackcloth and eating gruel, so my hubs and I instituted a little inexpensive tradition that we indulge in several times a week.

We put the kids to bed at their deliciously early bed time and then make some popcorn to share! We eat popcorn and watch something romantic, like Ice Road Truckers. It is simple and cheap, and just as good as a date!

Did you know that popcorn was a popular low cost snack during the Great Depression? And that it continued to rise in popularity in the US during WWII because sugar was rationed?

We were recently sent some great goodies from Kernel Season’s that make our popcorn ritual even more extra special!

We made Kernel Season’s All-Natural Popping Corn on the stove, and it was crunchy and delicious. I found the popcorn to be very dense, which was satisfying to bite into.

We used Movie Theater Butter Popping and Topping Oil in place of regular oil for the popping. The popcorn didn’t come out “greasy” tasting, which I see as a plus!

The real fun was sampling the different flavors of Popcorn Seasonings. The powdered flavorings are simple to shake on top of popcorn (or baked potatoes, or rice, or anything you fancy!). Kernel Season’s also has Popcorn Spritzer, a butter-flavored spray which contains no fat and no calories. You can use this just to add buttery taste, or spray your popcorn to help the Popcorn Seasonings “stick” better.

I used the Kettle Corn seasoning for Jojo and Deeds. Jojo enjoyed Kettle Corn but Deeds quickly commandeered my Ranch flavored sample (parent of the year confession: we pretty much ate popcorn for dinner that night).

I also enjoyed White Cheddar and of course Nacho Cheese! I love cheese!

Later I added some Ranch seasoning to a plate of beans and rice; I find this seasoning GUILTY of being DEE-LICIOUS. I will definitely want to replenish my supply of Popcorn Seasonings once it is all gone! I signed up for the Kernel’s Club, so hopefully I will get some coupons.

You can buy your popcorn seasonings on Amazon, places like Target or Wal-Mart, or shop the Kernel Season’s store. They have some great online deals, and some cute popcorn accessories such as a popcorn fork!

OK, so I am seriously obsessed with this stuff! However, they don’t sell any of the sweet flavors anywhere here that I can find! =( SO, I’d LOVE to try the caramel, chocolate marshmallow, and the apple cinnamon. Or maybe I’d have to trade the apple cinnamon for the jalapeno (which DH wants and I can’t seem to find either). Thanks so much!!
