25 Years of Cabbage Patch

Before Webkins or Tickle Me Elmo, before Furbies or Beanie Babies, there were Cabbage Patch Kids.

Cabbage Patch Kids ARE the original must-have, punch-that-stranger-in-the-face-before-he-buys-the-last-one, Christmas shopping frenzy toy in American history.

In 1983, the year of their mass market debut, about 3 million Cabbage Patch dolls were sold at $40 a doll.

I was among the masses who owned and loved a Cabbage Patch Doll. I had one “premie” girl doll with a pacifier. She was bald headed, and I named her Pat. “Playful Pat”, actually. Pat was my grandmother’s nickname; even though I was a preschooler, I wanted to honor her by making my doll her namesake. I have lots of memories involving Playful Pat, like the time I accidentally spilled orange juice all over her arms and they turned black, or dressing her in different baby clothes that formerly belonged to my younger brother. I even brought Playful Pat with me to our family portrait session at Olan Mills. She is in our 1984 photograph. If my parents knew how to use a scanner, I would share it with you right now.

I was more of a tom boy as a child, but I had a special tenderness for my Cabbage Patch Doll.

I also had a boy doll named Torrey Quincy. He had a cool ice hockey outfit. I always wondered why Cabbage Patch dolls had such strange names on their “birth certificates”. The reason, I only found out just recently, is that Cabbage Patch creator Xavier Roberts used a 1930’s baby names book as his inspiration.

It is hard to believe that it has been 25 years since Cabbage Patch Kids became a part of American pop history! Cabbage Patch Kids are celebrating their 25th Anniversary in an exciting way!

Newly released “Anniversary Kids”, dolls made with the original 1983 head moulds, are hitting stores soon! These dolls will be available in limited quantities (no word on exactly HOW limited yet)!

Once they arrive you will be able to spot them right away. Packaged in the traditional slant front package, and instead of creamy yellow and green, the new packages will be white and silver signifying 25 wonderful years!

I have a new little girl at my house by the name of Sue Charlsie!

Look at those pretty, green eyes!

Sue Charlsie is bedecked in a “vintage” reproduction outfit from the 1983 collection, including white plastic Mary Jane shoes. She also has a silver spoon to commemorate the “silver anniversary” of Cabbage Patch Kids!

What are your Cabbage Patch Kids memories? Starting on Monday, September 1st, you can post your photos and memories on the special 25th Anniversary website: CabbagePatchKids25.com

Much gratitude to Team Mom for giving me the scoop on Cabbage Patch!

I had a preemie Cabbage Patch doll too. She hd no hair and I called her “Bald Head”. Lovely name for a doll. I think her name was Caroline Adrianne. I am always on the lookout for a “Taryn”.
